Since we all should be currently boycotting Amazon, a reminder that Bezos owns Goodreads and there is a great, Black woman owned, alternative that you can easily migrate to. Highly recommend.

Friendly reminder that if you buy a book on Kindle, you're only paying for the rights to read, not own. If a book truly gets banned, it will be taken away from digital platforms like Kindle, nook, etc. Consider getting physical copies of banned (or other) books!

Someone reading this is contemplating dimming their light.Let that light shine even if it burns the eyes of the naysayers. In the words of Toni Morrison "I stood at the border, stood at the edge and claimed it as central.l claimed it as central, and let the rest of the world move over to where I was."

WE ARE STILL IN THIS.
Wipe your tears.
This is the difficult business of hope and defying expectation.
We do not give up.
We run through the tape.

Y’all aren’t allowed to throw in the towel until I do. 😉

Big breath. Locked in. Let’s do this.

Here are the anti-library & pro-censorship bills already prefiled for the 2025 legislative session across the US. It's your job to keep tabs on these, write your representatives, & speak up about the dismantling of public institutions of access + democracy.

Are there any Black women authors who feel like a kindred spirit to you? For me, it's Octavia E Butler becsuse of sci-fi love but also because she was so comfortable being a hermit. Same.

Library love 💯📚
the quality and range of services public libraries provide relative to what they cost is nothing short of a miracle imo. But yeah, sure, “run government like a business.” 📚

Always surprised how many folk on social media are unaware that highly visible women online regularly get threatened w/ rape and other violence. Happens to every woman w/ a substantial following I know, has for a decade regardless of platform. And no, authorities don’t care and that’s no solution.

Next time you see a writer hunched over their laptop while nursing a steaming (or iced) beverage, do not disturb. They're hard at work and fueling their creativity 😜

I say this a lot. People want to tout how many Black authors are winning awards and that's both true and great! But Black authors shouldn't HAVE TO BE AWARD WINNERS before you add their books to your collections. All the white authors in your collection haven't won awards...or even been nominated.
I love Black excellence n all but I also long for a world that rewards Black ordinariness--like, I want Black people to also be allowed to be mediocre and be successful!

And if you’re in St. Paul, Minnesota, there’s a fantastic Black woman- owned bookstore called Black Garnet Books that is also hosting a great event with the Weismann Museum tomorrow (Dec. 4 )that’s all about celebrating the pleasure of reading 💜
Here's your daily reminder that bookstores keep the love of reading alive — but they also keep neighborhoods beautiful. They are places to gather, to celebrate stories, to find community.

Please do your holiday shopping at your local independent bookstore, if you are lucky enough to still have one.
