It has a very very coherent, solid backbone of story is the thing. That is a major part of it worldwide appeal. You can scoff that it's just Dances with wolves or whatever, but Dance with wolves didn't invent that story either. Its very popular and well worn plot.

Dances with Wolves and Fern Gully are not the same movie and neither originated their story tropes. Avatar continuing version story tropes decades after either isn't really a case against Avatar any more than it's a case against either of them.
