What can academics do in disaster-type settings? (many thanks to Andy Whelton who helped us in HI on the learning curve)

What we did in 2 situations in HI was fill in the information needs for resident communities that local and state agencies didn't have capacity to serve.

CO2 fertilization arguments are such a distraction when real plants and ecosystems also need water (climate change translates to hydrologic intensification), nutrients, and are subject to insects, pathogens that are affected also by changing temperatures and moisture regimes.
Chs9 moves to agriculture - heavily citing McKitrick's own study which claims that that CO2 fertilization means a net positive effect on agriculture, ignoring wider risks of heat stress and drought which the IPCC assessed to be dominant. www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/w...

Problem is the undergrads who got by using LLMs are now grad students and don't see why (I) am being a roadblock to their defense.

I'm concerned ChatGPT hallucinations are sparking human hallucinations about what rigorous research actually is...
Reading, however slowly you do it, is thinking. And you cannot do research if you do not think.
Undergrads, I can understand.
But if a grad student uses LLMs to summarize papers, just leave, go and give the funding and space to someone who actually wants to learn something.
If you're a grad student or an undergrad interested in research I need to you listen to me very carefully.

You cannot learn to write good research papers if you do not read good research papers.

Stop asking LLMs to summarize papers for you.

The last months, I have been recalling how a number of my MIT Course 6 (CS) classmates would carry cash, and avoid transactions on wireless networks and Gmail.

The blissful disregard as we all caved to social media has been wonderful for meeting new people and global intellectual exchange.

Brilliant protest. Yosemite National Park workers hung an upside-down American flag — traditionally a symbol of distress or a national threat — thousands of feet off the ground on the side of El Capitan.

Scanning this list, I see LSAMP, whose small but steady funding stream has supported dozens if not hundreds of UH system students in their pursuits of STEM degrees.

I heard today from someone I deem reliable that this most certainly will be eliminated...
Is your NSF grant on this list? Reach out if so!

Ted Cruz released a list of grants flagged for DEI or "neo-Marxist class warfare propaganda" from his Oct. report.

NSF is using keywords from that report for their review, though Cruz's list is likely larger.

Thanks to this platform I feel like I've been getting good news in timely fashion. I check FB to see how a broader swath of local discourse is going, and it's tracking but a few days behind.

I also checked my spam folder and skimmed "The Blackburn Report: Holding the Federal Government Accountable"
