Possible, though I reckon it might be just a bonus, a byproduct of more crude tactics. Doesn't change the fact the lack of self-preservation instincts is baffling.

... but I guess instead of solidarity one can opt for everyone for themselves approach. This is not to say we don't get to be critical over funding allocation etc., but this particular attack seems very silly and irresponsible.

That whole thread over there seems very bizzare. You would think academics in the States would be a bit more weary of trivialising other academics research over funding they receive in the context of the current political climate surrounding funding of research there...

I don't buy it. I do believe that Russia made a deliberate intelligence leak about something like that to scare the Americans, and it worked. It's also a convenient story for the US establishment, btw, because it justifies a strategy that turned out to be a failure.
