True. But this theater is getting tiresome, and I am not sure it's working for Europe. Perhaps it's time to make it clear to Trump that there are no negotiations instead of leading him to think that there are—and in the process fooling a lot of Europeans into believing that peace is close.
What folks need to realize about "peace talks" is that this is all theater for Washington. Ukraine knows that Russia has no intention of stopping the war, and the Russians know the Ukrainians know that. So this is just all a performance for Trump, hoping he blames the other for the lack of peace.

Much of the discussion of the “peace plan” evades two blunt truths: (a) Europe has no strategy, and (b) Trump is chaotic and aligned with Putin. This isn’t ignorance but a refusal to reckon with reality - a depoliticised move that, at scale, helps Trump and Putin.

My take on Trump's peace plan, and why he can't pressure Ukraine into capitulation.

A few experts going right now: "hear me out, Budapest Memorandum, keeping Ukraine out of NATO, telling it to accept loss of Crimea, and pretending the Minsk Accords meant to save Ukraine's sovereignty were all mistakes, but if we now combine all this idiocy into a 28-point plan, it might work!"

Probably the best analysis of this new round of gross incompetence and institutional decline of the US diplomacy out there.

CONFIRMED sabotage on Poland's strategic Warsaw-Lublin-Ukraine railway line. An explosive device destroyed approximately one meter of rail. Local residents reported hearing an explosion around 10 PM the previous evening.

This is the weirdest timeline. Suetonius would have plenty of material to write the lives of the modern emperors.

Scholars from Estonia, Czechia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine write nuanced, deeply argued pieces about the war. One of them about Westsplaing. An American scholar jumps in, distorts their views, and explains that their ideas are “American frameworks.” You can't make this stuff up.
What ensues in academia when one critiques another’s favourite empire…The charge of borrowing from US frameworks toward a robust critique of westsplaining must be the biggest straw person fallacy to my work so far. How did this get through peer review? But also glad to stand there with Maria Mälksoo

There are times in this profession that invoke just a little bit of joy at little things. Today is one of these tiny moments, when I receive proofs of my entry translated into... Turkish. Now I know that one could describe tribunus stabuli as "Saray ve Ordu İçin At Tedarikinden Sorumlu Görevli" 😉.

Jeszcze nie sprawdzałem, ale sądząc z reakcji libków i konserwy na X powinienem się tego spodziewać.

Podobno Nowego Jorku też już nie ma, tak jak Paryża i Berlina.

Trump’s fixation on the idea that Pu wants to end the war leads to this endless cycle of trying to set up another meeting to talk it out. He’s wasting everyone’s time, including his own. In the meantime, Ukrainians are dying. Morbid irony given his insistence he wants to save lives.

Just submitted a review of Wolfram Kinzig's amazing book A History of Early Christian Creeds.
It was such a joy reading it and discussing it back in the summer at the book launch.
Go read it or perhaps, given the length, browse it - you will never think about the Nicene creed in the same way again.

When Putin talks to a Russians he consistently says that they invade Ukraine to destroy the state and nation and correct the path of history. NATO and similar framings are just for the useful foreigners.
Pu spells out Ru's imperialist motivations for the war. He calls the conquest a long-held dream and historical destiny.

He beclowns those who insist NATO expansion caused the war. Let's see if anyone from the Mearsheimer fan club admits the claim has been falsified.
