I read a scary story book at a similar age where a group of students on a field trip finds a weird algae that turns them all into swamp monsters, and I think about it almost every time I'm out doing fieldwork in a bog or wherever.

There is a book of horror stories I read at 10, 11? Mostly tame, largely unmemorable. An anthology maybe?
But.
In one story mirror doppelgängers come out of a house's mirrors at night, in the dark, and murder their originals.
I'm now 41 and still sometimes freaked out by mirrors.
