Fishing for sunfish is one of the simplest & most fun forms of angling, especially with a fly rod.

I love summer evenings on the local pond, casting ants to bluegills. And chasing new sunfish species when I travel.

The Nutcracker? Psh, I prefer The Shellcracker!

Other common names for the redear sunfish include “shellcracker” (from the specialized teeth in their throat that enable them to crush the shells of snails + mussels) and “stumpknocker” (from their tendency to congregate around logs) #25DaysofFishmas

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Minnesota was one of the original Wilderness areas designated by the 1964 Wilderness Act—signed into law 56 years ago today—which immediately protected 54 areas, 9.1 million acres, in 13 states.

I'll say it a thousand times -- any account of the past that only celebrates the good parts of a nation without reckoning with the bad is not what we call "history"

It is propaganda, pure and simple.
You can't teach U.S. history without "divisive" narratives. Slavery wasn't "unifying." The Japanese incarceration wasn't "unifying." The anti-immigrant Operation Wetback (real name) wasn't "unifying."
It's history's job to tell the truth, not cover up past racism to pave the way for future racism.

The U.S. Senate is currently considering a budget reconciliation bill that quietly includes language that could devastate our public lands. It would:
- Make over 250 million acres of public land eligible for sale
- Mandate the sale of at least 2 million acres of Forest Service and BLM land

The proposal mandates millions of acres of your public lands sold across 11 western states. Once these lands are gone, they aren't coming back. This is a complete betrayal of the public trust. #publiclandowner

Because of four decades of bad faith narratives by rich folks who want your taxes to go up and their taxes to go down, most folks don’t know this: career federal workers are heroes who work extremely hard every day and go above and beyond all across America to improve your lives.

There’s a farm pond in Idaho where you pay to fish for stocked white sturgeon.

I visited for my book Fishing Through the Apocalypse, taking a look at the future of angling.

As habitat & fisheries decline, these “pay ponds” replace the real thing.

Is that the future we want?

there is just something about pumpkinseed - a darling fish
There are 13 recognized species in the bluegill’s genus (Lepomis) including others common in the #GreatLakes like pumpkinseed + green sunfish. To make things extra interesting, these species can often hybridize with each other leading to some aptly-named hybrids like the pumpkingill #25DaysofFishmas

I've often heard anglers say that bluegills get stunted if you don't harvest enough. It turns out, the opposite is true. You can't harvest your way to big bluegills.

Why Everything You Know About Bluegill Management is Wrong
Every angler knows that if you don’t remove enough bluegills from a pond, they’ll overpopulate and become stunted. But new research says that idea is usually wrong, and the opposite may be true.
