#WeekendRead #NoTimeToDie! Matt, Better &co show @ Science Immunology that efferocytosis of apoptotic neutrophils (not epithelial cells) by alveolar macrophages reprograms their metabolism, boosting glutaminolysis & decreasing ROS, thus favoring repair but facilitating secondary bacterial infections
Cell type–specific efferocytosis determines functional plasticity of alveolar macrophages
MPO activates an immunometabolic rheostat to restrict the functional plasticity of macrophages in favor of proresolving properties.

Once upon a time, some villagers came across a large, ornate wooden box in the local woods. On the side of the box was a message:

“Whatever money you put in this box will, in future, grow to become 2.5 times larger.”

Silence will not shield scientists from the consequences of an increasingly hostile political landscape.

UK and other non-US scientists must act to support our US colleagues.

Here's what I think we should be doing...

Thank you @iainmoppett.bsky.social for this really helpful summary thread of the first major publication from SNAP-3. We are really grateful to all the local investigators and patients who contributed the study, thank you!

Skytorial: pH management in DKA!

I've been following debates about this for a *long* time

(eg wrote this blog in 2016, which stands up pretty darn well: emcrit.org/pulmcrit/bic...)

after years of arguing, lemme break down my take on this 😁

Skytorial: Piptazo vs Cefepime 😁

Recently this JAMA-IM paper correlating piptazo with mortality has gained a weird amount of attention

(It's been out for months so it's not really new)

This one of the most methodologically horrific papers I've ever seen

Lets talk real quick about the paper...

Viscoelastic haemostatic assay-guided therapy was associated with:
⬇️ RBC, platelet & FFP transfusion
⬇️ operating theatre & ICU duration of stay

NO difference in:
• rates of surgical reintervention
• total duration of stay
• mortality

Wonderful illustration of the importance of reading your #peeg waveform and not just trusting the number the algorithm generates. Is this patient waking up? Nope; it’s mains interference - unplug the bed and a massive difference results in the number, but the deltas were always there. #anaesthesia

My unit is full of people dying from social neglect. Treating injustice and disparity with ventilators and vasopressors is like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. I could keep doing it if I knew that our provincial government was trying to fix the underlying problems.

In clinical research, you will often receive feedback on study design, stats, and/or data analysis from an editor or reviewer that is simply wrong. Here is a list of common "statistical myths" and references you can use to push back.
