Incredible scoop! Career officials inside the Trump administration first viewed the case of Mr. Abrego like any normal case of a wrongful deportation — they began looking for ways to bring him back, as happens normally when ICE makes mistakes.

Then the White House got involved, and blew it up.
Late last month, three days after Abrego Garcia’s family filed its lawsuit over his deportation, government attorneys began discussing how to undo the mistake and bring him back. In their conversations, officials went so far as to float the idea of having the U.S. ambassador to El Salvador make a personal appeal to the country’s president for Abrego Garcia’s return. But first, the State Department’s legal team wanted more information from DHS about his alleged role in the MS-13 gang. The thin evidence supplied in response was met with skepticism from the State Department lawyers. Abrego Garcia, who came to the United States illegally when he was 16 years old, was one of 23 Salvadorans deported on March 15. But his name had not appeared on an internal list of 10 gang members sought by President Nayib Bukele. Attorneys at DHS had other concerns. They were aware that, six years ago, a judge had granted Abrego Garcia protected status over fears that he could be targeted for violence should he be returned to El Salvador. That protection was still in effect and had been violated by the March 15 deportation. They wanted to know if U.S. diplomats could ask the Salvadoran government to keep him separated from Barrio 18 gang members who had threatened him in the past and might harm him.

10. As part of the notice procedure, the alien is informed that he or she can make a telephone call to whomever he or she desires, including legal representatives. ICE ensures that telephones are made available for the aliens and that the aliens have access to the telephone lines. 11. Although there may be fact-specific exceptional cases, in a general case, after an alien is served with Form AEA 21-B, the alien is given a reasonable amount of time, and no less than 12 hours, including the ability to make a telephone call, to indicate or express an intent to file a habeas petition. If the alien does not express any such intention, then ICE may proceed with the removal, though such removal may not actually occur for many more hours or days, giving the alien additional time to express an intent. If the alien does express an intent to file a habeas petition, the alien is given a reasonable amount of time, and no less than 24 hours, to actually file that petition. If the alien does not file such a petition within 24 hours, then ICE may proceed with the removal, though such removal may not actually occur for many more hours or days, giving the alien additional time to file the petition. Further, because aliens subject to the AEA are often detained for several days before removal, they frequently have much more time to express an intent to file a habeas petition or to actually file such a petition. Moreover, these timeframes are consistent with, if not more generous than, the timeframes used for expedited removal procedures under Title 8.

Wow, this is the first time we've heard this number. Previous reporting suggested it was $6 million. So now it's $15 million of U.S. taxpayer dollars to imprison people in El Salvador without trial.

Van Hollen says he learned that Trump Admin agreed to pay El Salvador $15million to detain the men they sent there. He is aware that there is a "document that memorialized the payments" but he has not seen the document itself.

Unless there was another sealed filing which isn’t on the docket (a real possibility), it would appear that the administration has failed to provide the required information about what they are doing to try to get him back.

Yet ANOTHER story of a Venezuelan man ripped away from his family in the U.S. because of his tattoos; in this case a tattoo of a rose and a tattoo of a crown.

It’s been three weeks and his wife and kids have no idea what’s happened to him. Like others, El Salvador is holding him incommunicado.
In the early hours of January 29, 2025, the famly went to a regular check-in appointment with ICE in Charlotte. Luz, who was pregnant at the time, says when an officer called Zambrano Perez's name, they didn't suspect anything because he had never had issues before. But, then the office started asking him if he was involved with any criminal group and inquiring about his clothing and tattoos. Zambrano Perez has a tattoo on his hand of a crown with his name on it that he got when he was 15 years old. He has another tattoo of a rose.

Update from the Mahmoud Khalil case; at his first immigration court hearing, it appears that the government didn’t even have any evidence ready and the judge is giving them until Friday to submit it or she will terminate the case.
