Commentary: Book-ban legislative two-step damages parents’ rights
A pair of legislative bills argue that the law gives school districts too much discretion over school-library book bands, a contradiction with a Supreme Court ruling. Both are damaging.

When will we hold the billionaires responsible for these avoidable crises? Beyond sick of this technology.

Librarians are educators. Neither one has the power or influence to make even a small dent in this cancer.

It's time to be really honest about the future we desire.
Students aren’t just using AI for homework. Many are using chatbots as “friends” & emotional support. I’m featured in SLJ’s Jan 2026 cover story With Friends Like These. My Special Edition breaks down what educators + librarians can do now starting in elementary.

“OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has defended the technology’s ‘right to learn’ from books & articles, ‘like a human can.’ This deceptive, feel-good idea prevents the public discussion we need to have about how AI companies are using the creative & intellectual works upon which they are utterly dependent.”
AI doesn't "learn" like a human, it makes copies of books, art, music, and videos. Which could be a big problem for Silicon Valley. My latest investigation for the The Atlantic presents research that the AI industry has been trying to keep hidden. www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...
AI’s Memorization Crisis
Large language models don’t “learn”—they copy. And that could change everything for the tech industry.

I'll eagerly await the full story in January. In the meantime, I'm increasingly alarmed at the uncritical adoption & evangelical stance of those pushing AI & its rapid incorporation into existing ed tech.
To be blunt, this is not going to help students be anything but fast, sloppy, & less capable.
I had a cool day hanging out with @leevgaines.bsky.social , a freelance reporter for @npr.org! She shadowed me and spoke to many of my students about AI. The full story will come out in January, but please go watch Lee’s TikTok here! www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8yJ1WUu/
