Initially, Gary Gygax, co-creator of D&D, was relatively positive on these APAs talking about his game. Though, in an oft-repeated anecdote, the editor of A&E did catch him by surprise. In an interview with Spike Y Jones, long-time contributor of A&E, that was published in the 300th issue, Gold recounted a phone call she received: Lee: Hi Voice: I’d like to speak to Lee Gold Lee: I’m Lee Gold Voice: You’re a woman! Lee: Yes, that’s right. Who are you? Voice: I’m Gary Gygax. Lee: Mr Gygax. How wonderful to speak to you. We really love your game D&D. Gygax: You’re a woman! Lee: Yes, that’s right. I assume you’re calling because I mailed you a copy of A&E. Gygax: You’re a woman! Lee: Yes, that’s right. Was there anything special you wanted to talk about? Gygax: I wrote some bad things about women wargamers… Lee: That’s all right. I never read the article. You don’t have to feel embarrassed. Gygax: You’re a woman!
