As a teen, I saw “Missing,” the 1982 film about people being disappeared by Pinochet’s regime. I read news about the Argentinian Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo, searching for their own disappeared. I knew, too, about the Stasi in East Germany. Terrifying police states seemed inconceivable here.
