I am devastated to hear about the two executive orders that threaten our forests. Call your congress folks about standing up for our forests & block the actions from:

"Immediate Expansion of American Timber Production"

& "Addressing The Threat To National Security from Imports of Timber, Lumber"
It's important to parse out that this is veiled as a "national security" issue/threat. But what it really is, is an excuse and an opening to deforest our protected land.

- Climate change
- Increased foot traffic at almost ALL national parks (16% since 2010)
- Decreased staffing (20% since 2010)

We interrupt your regularly-scheduled chaos to bring you some cool microbiome science. 🦠 🖥️ 🧬
"Longitudinal phage–bacteria dynamics in the early life gut microbiome" now out in Nature Microbiology.

We wanted a way to measure bacteria and phage in metagenomes 1/

Longitudinal phage–bacteria dynamics in the early life gut microbiome - Nature Microbiology
Reanalysis of 12,262 longitudinal infant gut microbiome samples using the Marker-MAGu pipeline revealed phage–bacteria dynamics over the first year of life.

And a special double #protistsonsky from me today with a second protist from rainforest soil. This testate amoeba has awoken from stasis (dry soil), but hasn't quite emerged from its protective plug. At least that's how I interpret this... in cold weather back in Maine I see something similar!

Here is a Centropyxis testate amoeba picking up a little rock with its pseudopod. Notice the pseudopod attachment point on the culture dish surface and the blebbing that happens there.

Still can't get over the beauty of the spiral shaped amphid 🌀 of this female Achromadora sp. This algae 🦠 and diatom feeder was found in soil from cultivated maize/corn fields in South Africa 🌍. Usually found in aquatic environments and amongst mosses 🏞️ #nematode #ecology #FreeLivinfNematodes

I used the nodule-crushing method throughout my PhD and postdoc work on rhizobia, and it works!

Here we diluted the crushed nodule bacterial community to evenly inoculate our rhizobia (R+) plants! bit.ly/41rwc5S

I find full communities to be more effective than individual isolates, in most cases.
