1000000%! People forget (or don't like?) that good lab skills are a SKILL! skills take time to develop!
Every few months the "good lab hands" thing comes up and it misses a key point: you can learn to have good hands. Training matters.

Good hands aren't some magic gift from the PCR gods, you have to develop them through directed repetitive practice, like any other skill

New #URochesterResearch in @natcomms.nature.com ⬇️

Led by Asst Professor of Orthopaedics Anne Nichols, PhD, the team uncovered the first direct evidence that epitenon cells play a key role in tendon healing and that removing them might actually improve recovery.

The cell populations that contribute to healing and scar tissue formation following tendon injury are poorly defined. Here the authors show that cells originating from the tendon epitenon give rise to...

Finally, I don't know why we resist defining scientific research as a creative endeavor. Any scientist who has achieved some degree of professional success recognizes the creativity and the bursts of conceptual understanding that accompany major innovation.

Today, my NIH colleagues and I did something scary but really important. We spoke up about egregious harms we are seeing happen to research participants and public health through thoughtless and politicized policies at NIH. 🧵1/3

Scientists are unfairly and devastatingly seeing their grants cut and careers thrown into uncertainty, yet are still working 24/7 to continue their research, treat patients, talk to journalists, advocate with elected officials, and keep the public informed about potential threats. Absolute heroes!

Thanks @ryanet.bsky.social for sharing- I just called my 3 representatives and spoke to an actual human at 2/3. Only took maybe 20 minutes.
5calls.org/issue/nih-ns... is a good start. Attend rallies. Discuss the value and requirement of federal funding for biomedical research in public forums. Run for office? (I'd vote for you!)

The impact of cuts in the NIH & NSF budget on the industry behind research (regents, test kits, lab supplies, etc) will be huge. In my community LabCorp, Fisher and Carolina Biologicals all have facilities—they will be devastated.Thermo Fisher alone has a workforce of around 122,000 employees 1/2

My occasional reminder to folks on tenure and promotion committees that there will be a cohort of people whose early careers were defined entirely by the pandemic and *waves vaguely* this nonsense, and it *will* impact their productivity.

It can't not.
