🧵 @jcbslide.bsky.social 's reply reflects a common but crucial misunderstanding: that democracy simply is civil liberties and fair procedures. But rights alone don’t guarantee democratic legitimacy. What matters is whether the public can meaningfully participate in truth, power, and accountability.
Our Democracy is freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly, and the right to a fair trial. Eliot, what about democracy needs to be changed? The consent of the governed? Separation of powers? Private ownership & capitalism maybe? Don’t back seat drive. Share.
It's not that politics is being done wrong, it's that democracy is being done wrong. If he don't fix the latter, the former just becomes performance.

The accidental discovery of the woman led to a video that went viral, spurring public outrage. The Communist Party quashed the discussion, but the anger never went away.

Ukraine-HK solidarity might not be something one would expect, but it's real, and has been a thing before Russia's invasion

A quick recap of the timeline:

Nov 2013 - Feb 2014) Maidan Movement, Ukraine
Sep - Dec 2014) Umbrella Movement, HK
...
Jun - Jul 2020) Revolution of Our Times, HK
This might sound random but if you’ve been following HK since 2014, this actually makes perfect sense
Edwin Wan, 50, from #HongKong , who serves in the Ukrainian Marine Corps, said, "I came to #Ukraine to fight the Communists. #Putin is a dictator.
#Zelensky is a president who practices freedom & democracy. He protects Ukraine & the interests of the people."

Hong Kong protest drama "May You Stay Forever Young" has been uploaded to Youtube and is available to view for free -- and, for now, without a VPN in Hong Kong.

Trigger warning for those who were in Hong Kong in 2019. But also here's passing on the message that: "Even if in vain, we will sustain."

I'm not sure if this NYT video has been shared on Bluesky before. But here's doing so to help people understand why there are people so upset by a court verdict made in Hong Kong today about events which took place more than 5 years ago now -- on July 21, 2019.

*Trigger alert though!

I always thought this was where it was all headed. Abolishing birthright citizenship for the non-white and non-rich. And why I teach on United States v. Wong Kim Ark every semester.
