I would genuinely fly out to Montana or whatever state if one of these people could coherently explain their political economy to me. Like, walk me through the thought process and tradeoffs they’re making when they decide to vote for republicans.

A corollary is that people also wildly overestimate how many others like them there are. A rock crusher who has run out of rocks may think the economy is doing poorly because they are personally doing poorly. But, there aren’t really that many rock crushers around!
Yes! In 2024 most people said their finances were good and their local economy was strong. But they perceived the US ECONOMY AS A WHOLE as very weak, historically weak. That's a clue! Discontent wasn't inflation-driven, it was narrative- and media-driven.
Polls have consistently shown a huge gap in how people perceive the economy for others and how they rate it for themselves
