The path of the club at impact can vary depending on ball position.

Even with the same swing
November 7, 2025 at 8:07 PM
Any path can strike any part of the face.

Stop blaming your path-direction for mis-strikes
November 7, 2025 at 8:07 PM
Opening or closing the face a very significant 5 degrees (twisting around the sweet spot) will only move the strike 2mm.

So mis-strikes are not caused by an overly open/closed face.
November 7, 2025 at 8:07 PM
It takes as little as 3 degrees open/closed with the face to hit a shot 35+ yards off-line with a driver (at 240 yards).
November 7, 2025 at 8:07 PM
Digging just 1/4 inch deeper can be the difference between contacting ball and turf together, or hitting a whole 2+ inches behind it

Leaning that shaft forwards DOES makes you strike higher on the face.

But....

It takes a whole 10 degrees of forward shaft lean (rotating the club around the sweet spot) to move the strike just 1 groove higher.

The part of the ball you hit (inside/outside quadrant) has nothing to do with the path the club takes.

It's all to do with the face angle. Open to the target = inside quadrant struck first (and vice versa).

95% of golfers are using complex solutions to simple problems.

This same 95% of golfers have really good control over instinctive, simple solutions, they just choose to never use them (or even actively sabotage them).

The lessons...

Don’t be frightened to use simple INTENTS to change patterns.

Not all changes have to be complex/internal/mechanical ones.

Small changes can be VERY meaningful in golf.

Tapping into our instincts is a lost art in golf/golf instruction.

I then discussed training methods and some drills to help solidify this and increase the speed of learning.

Weeks later, they reported back that their scores have come down significantly (2.8 shots off handicap), and they have massively reduced their thin shots (I asked them to track it).
October 27, 2025 at 12:57 PM
The fact is, the change was minimal - moving the average strike just 2 grooves up the face is a 6-7mm improvement. While you might not see this on camera, THESE are the important changes/variables that matter in golf.

“I could give you an answer to that, but it would only distract you from the task of trying to dig deeper to fix your pattern. The bottom line here is, you don’t need to know. You just need to understand what to do/feel to fix the thin pattern and then get better at implementing it precisely”

After doing this, he asked me “so what changed in my swing”

My response.....
October 27, 2025 at 12:57 PM
After hitting 10 shots with a simple, EXTERNAL and clear intent, his strike pattern immediately improved (see pic 2).
October 27, 2025 at 12:57 PM
With each attempt, he was able to move the arc depth as desired. Sure - not with perfect precision,

but that’s where the training comes in.
October 27, 2025 at 12:57 PM
We then went through a very simple exercise - make a full speed swing and 🟢Brush the grass the Lightest you can.
🟢Now dig super deep.
🟢Now go somewhere in between.
October 27, 2025 at 12:57 PM
the immediate reaction from a golfer is to move to internal swing thoughts - about body or arm or legs or sequencing etc.

Golfers have become so divorced from the idea of just using a simple external intent.
October 27, 2025 at 12:57 PM
“Before we start, just entertain me a moment. Can you hit a few shots where you try to dig deeper.

His response was “how do I do that - what do I have to think of in my swing to achieve that”?

I find this super interesting because.....
