The path of the club at impact can vary depending on ball position.

Even with the same swing

Any path can strike any part of the face.

Stop blaming your path-direction for mis-strikes

Opening or closing the face a very significant 5 degrees (twisting around the sweet spot) will only move the strike 2mm.

So mis-strikes are not caused by an overly open/closed face.

It takes as little as 3 degrees open/closed with the face to hit a shot 35+ yards off-line with a driver (at 240 yards).

Digging just 1/4 inch deeper can be the difference between contacting ball and turf together, or hitting a whole 2+ inches behind it

Leaning that shaft forwards DOES makes you strike higher on the face.

But....

It takes a whole 10 degrees of forward shaft lean (rotating the club around the sweet spot) to move the strike just 1 groove higher.

The part of the ball you hit (inside/outside quadrant) has nothing to do with the path the club takes.

It's all to do with the face angle. Open to the target = inside quadrant struck first (and vice versa).

After hitting 10 shots with a simple, EXTERNAL and clear intent, his strike pattern immediately improved (see pic 2).

Golf fixes can sometimes be super simple.

Here’s an interesting one.

Had a player hitting thin shot patterns. Came to me for a lesson to try and fix them.

You’ll hate what I told him, but I think it’s worth exploring……

So, to re-cap, if
🟢left, then open the face more
🟢right, then close the face more
🟢on target (but you don't like the curve amount), then swing more in the direction of the curve
🟢then repeat the process

By following these simple rules, you'll eventually calibrate your desired shot type without the need for a launch monitor.
October 8, 2025 at 7:14 PM
it means your path is too much to the right....

and you need to swing more left
October 8, 2025 at 7:14 PM
For example, if your shots are on-target but all have a big left curve to get there (and you want to straighten it out)...
October 8, 2025 at 7:14 PM
If your shots are on-target, but you don't like how they curve to get there, then swing more in the direction of the curve.
October 8, 2025 at 7:14 PM
Regardless of your path, getting the face more closed at impact will create more on-target shots.
October 8, 2025 at 7:14 PM
Conversely, if your shot pattern is too far to the right, you are presenting the face too open for your current club path.
October 8, 2025 at 7:14 PM
Regardless of your path, simply getting the face more open at impact will make the shot more on-target.
October 8, 2025 at 7:14 PM
In well-struck drives/iron shots, if your shot pattern is too far left, it simply means your face is too closed (at impact) for your given club path.

Now the pattern would look something more like this

And the predicted score would be 3.29

Finally, if we get this player to present the clubhead just 1 groove higher (so they hit 1 groove lower on average) it looks like this.

Now 90% of the shots fall within the acceptable area
