I was looking for rare flowers in Table Mountain National Park (Cape Town) this morn when I heard a puffing hiss a few ft away. This large 80cm/30in Puffadder was displeased with my presence! Would have struck if I’d got closer but when it realized I was no danger it took off. Amazing beast! #snake

There must be a gajillion versions of this on the interwebs, but here's my take on last evening's Blood Moon, made from my Cape Town front yard. It was an amazing thing to watch! #bloodmoon #eclipse #capetown

Grabbed a quick snap of an African Swamphen aka Purple Gallinule at my local patch in Cape Town yesterday. They sound crazy too - a bit like a janky toy machine-gun firing through deflating bagpipes

It's a great 2-owls-snoozing-in-my-yard day today in Cape Town!

I've only seen the male recently & was worried that his mate had been killed by rat poison or a car, but she's here today

Brandt's Cormorant (Urile penicillatus) displaying in a breeding colony in Monterey, California, photographed by me back in 2008 with a janky old Tokina 300mm f4 lens.

I'm a big fan of #cormorants' colourful eyes. This species has an iridescent throat, too.

I’m at the largest-ever conference on Solar Radiation Modification aka solar geoengineering which (conveniently) is in my home city of Cape Town. Learning a lot & looking forward to writing interesting stuff!

Someone said it's World #Chameleon Day

I don't know if that's true but here's a young Cape Dwarf Chameleon (Bradypodion pumilum) that I photographed climbing a restio in Rondevlei Nature Reserve, Cape Town, back in 2018

(This species is often a lot more colourful)

African Fish-Eagle (Ichthyophaga vocifer) and the Moon, Chobe National Park, Botswana.

As might be obvious, this is a close relative of the Bald Eagle.

BTW it's World Penguin Day today, FWIW

Here are a couple of African Penguins splashing ashore on Boulders Beach on the Cape Peninsula

This species is predicted to be functionally #extinct by 2035 thanks to overfishing & #climate breakdown

April was my favorite month when I lived in New York City, with the spring warblers coming through.

I'm not saying you mustn't think about the impacts of climate change on species - they are profound, & I wrote a whole book about them - but to assume you know what the local climate is going to be and which species will be able to thrive there 75 years from now is, well, ambitious.

A couple of Fork-tailed Drongos in my backyard. This species, with its corvid-llike smarts, incredible vocal ability (inc. mimicry) and interesting social setup has become progressively more common in Cape Town during the last 20 years or so. (c)Adam Welz 2025 #birds #birding #bird #capetown
