I'm hearing a new round of layoffs just hit Penguin Random House. No news coverage yet so I'm not sure how large.

Awful news for book, film, and TV criticism.
Today, Paste Magazine shuttered all its non-music verticals, a choice I am both professionally and personally heartbroken about. Sadly, I am once again looking for a place that wants to let me write about Books and TV on the regular, so hit me up if that’s you or anyone you know.

Just want you to know that when I asked Geoff why he gave the silent treatment to an open letter written by his own "future of games" program (& co-signed by 3000+ industry peers), he replied:

"Because that's my show and nobody gets to tell me how I should use my platform". 💀💀💀

If you ask for book recommendations for a specific month or season, you will get recs for everything *but* that specific month or season.
This is incredible because I scrolled through at least 3 dozen comments and every single one was from a month other than December 😭
What interesting books are being released in December?

I will forever be obsessed with the aesthetics of The Lakeside Press, my favorite piece of Chicago history. Here's their 1915 holiday card, with a view of Dearborn Station's original pitched roof through the windows.

"World's first potential trillionaire has killed 600,000 people, including 400,000 children" is the only headline that anyone should ever read about Elon Musk
One analytical model shows that, as of November 5th, the dismantling of U.S.A.I.D. has already caused the deaths of 600,000 people, two-thirds of them children. https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/jUzNSc

The AFL-CIO should start throwing some money towards labor journalism. If it was done right (i.e. with them accepting that journalists must have full editorial control over what’s published, whether or not union leaders like what they have to say) it could really have such a hugely positive impact

Yesterday, 12+ Conde Nast staffers went to Stan Duncan, Head of HR, to ask questions about the Teen Vogue cuts.

Duncan told them to "return to work."

Hours later, 4 were fired for the "extreme misconduct" of ... trying to ask Duncan questions.

Condé Nast abruptly fires 4 staffers after HR confrontation
The firings were an unsubtle message to its employee union that the publisher was taking a harder line in its dealings with employees.

The 1933 theatrical release poster for Universal's THE INVISIBLE MAN (left) is an all-timer, but the teaser poster (right) is just unbelievably good. There's something anachronistically modern about it, like the guerilla marketing for a period horror that came out last year.
