Remembering Albert Camus on his birthday 🎂
📷 Henri Cartier-Bresson, 1944

"Looking at the famous portrait by Cartier-Bresson from the forties you see why people thought of him as a star & not just as a sage; you also see that he knew the effect he was having."

So thrilling to see Habs advance to playoffs!
We've had better teams, of course, and more finished teams -- but I can't recall a Montreal Canadiens team that played with more heart, more spirit , or had a brighter core of young players.

I've been a crazed Habs fan for almost sixty years now (58 to be precise.) We've had better teams, of course, and more finished teams -- but I can't recall a Montreal Canadiens team that played with more heart, more spirit , or had a brighter core of young players.
THEY'RE IN ✅

Glad to offer this praise of Canadian patriotism, trying to distinguish it from the more toxic forms of nationalism.
As the good, quiet middle child, Canada is so often overlooked by the UK, so it was great to hear the Situation finally turning up on Radio 4, with this excellent piece by Adam Gopnik and an equally excellent interview with Margaret Macmillan on Broadcasting House. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...

Another seasonal favorite. Does anyone know this book? We're reading it again today. Adam Gopnik is one of my favorite writers — So smart and sensitive. His words are always thoughtful and inspiring. Find a copy if you haven't read it yet. It's so good! ❄️✨

Adam Gopnik writes about the changes in the skies above, from Saturn’s disappearing rings to ever more drone sightings, and their parallels to life below.
As if Times Weren’t Unsettling Enough, Saturn Is Losing Its Rings
The rain it raineth every day, as Shakespeare noted, apparently even on Saturn. The cosmos, it seems, is no comfort at this moment.
