Such incredible PR!
Our Piper at the Gates of Dawn jumper stirred a bit of Satanic Panic! Thank you, @davidmbarnett.bsky.social, for covering this story for The Guardian.

Finished Alien Isolation on a foggy fall Sunday evening. An 8/10 horror experience and maybe my favorite genre video game, which says a lot about my perception of the state of horror video games

I thought withdrawing from Analog after 10 years of trying hurt. Scott walked away from F&SF after more than 50! I feel like I could’ve written this because it’s basically the experience I had. I’m so sorry, Scott. We need an antho for all these stories. “The Ones Who Walk Away from MRM”?
On August 12, 1971, 16-year-old me mailed the first story I ever wrote off on its first submission to my dream market, F&SF. My tale was quickly rejected. On July 17th, 2025, I finally sold a story to that magazine. Here's why I felt I had to withdraw that story. www.scottedelman.com/wordpress/20...

I'm of two minds here. Some of Alien: Earth was stellar, some of it abysmal. Daring to hope they can course-correct and build on the show's strengths while weeding out what it fucked up

It’s well past midnight and I was so caught up in my book that I forgot today’s vintage book cover. Oops! This is fitting to the dark hour - cinematic, nocturnal, subterranean.

Working on the next short story for my upcoming collection, and I think the idea just morphed into a novel. Kinda cool when that happens!

I'm also just noticing how much this sounds like Silent Hill
As an avid horror fiction enjoyer, I love being deeply unsettled by all those heavily photoshopped character portraits, and very much looking forward to be weirded out by Netflix selling us the mid-twen, approaching-30 main cast as high schoolers or something

Finished King Sorrow by @joe-hill.bsky.social, 5 stars, no notes, all (dragon)fire.
16 hours into Joe Hill's King Sorrow and HOLY SHIT do I enjoy the ride. 10 years ago his novel The Fireman became an instant favorite and now I'll have to re-read it after, to find out which one I like more

PT 2: Instead of going straight to Christmas horror movies. Spend some time learning from and supporting Native American voices and experiences expressed through horror. Some of these depictions are better than others and we need to learn the difference. #nativeamerican #indigenouspeople

Listen to Fay, for she is very wise
Many new writers come to the world of writing FROM the world of visual images. Be wary. These are vastly different mediums and the rules of engagement are different. What a film uses to seduce you isn't what a book uses to seduce you. Character is key.

Your job as a writer includes being very mean to your favorite characters. You hurt them. This means emotionally, psychologically and especially physically. They are having a bad time and it's all your fault. Lean in. Stop being nice. Your life isn't nice to you.

In a good novel, the writer writes ongoing 'hooks'. They don't rely on the first hook thinking it will have sufficient hook energy to power the whole novel. Instead, as they develop character, they litter the novel with life problems. Your character evolves.
