In this gorgeous image, Lyman Insley captured the bright heart of the Rosette Nebula where lies NGC 2244 (Caldwell 50 or Satellite Cluster), an open cluster located some 5,200 ly away in Monoceros.

The image shows the heart of the Rosette Nebula, a vast cloud of gas and dust in space. It is a vibrant astronomical image, with a cluster of bright stars (NGC 2244) at the center, shining with white or pale yellow light, like a sparkling chandelier. The nebula is illuminated in vivid colors: red (sulfur), green (hydrogen) and blue (oxygen). The red areas appear as soft warm glows, the green/turquoise ones form a diffuse and predominant haze, while the blue adds ethereal touches, similar to thin veils of fog. Here’s a pic I took from my patio of a tawny frogmouth in Sydney, Australia. They’re often confused with owls, but are actually more closely related to the nightjars. Their feet are weak and lack the curved talons of owls. 😁
