I haven’t used Amazon in over a decade but the fact that prices are raised everywhere else to meet their “lowest price guarantee” is infuriating

One thing editors drilled into me was to use "farther" for physical distances, "further" for metaphorical ones.

I have a mnemonic for this:

Mercury is farther from the sun than Earth? Nothing could be further from the truth.

I am watching a fountain pen ink swatch video and after she drops the ink from the pipette onto the paper, she *clutches chest* empties the extra ink into her rinse cup.

Every year, hundreds of children in the US gain access to a firearm and unintentionally shoot themselves or someone else. So far in 2025, there have been at least 175 unintentional shootings by children, resulting in 72 deaths and 106 injuries nationally.
We must make sure no more children are added to this list

A 5-year-old girl was unintentionally shot and wounded by her 6-year-old brother last week in Cincinnati, Ohio. Authorities have not yet shared how the children were able to access the gun.

These tragedies are preventable with secure gun storage.

One aspect I noticed recently is that in a setting where people are drinking booze it can make it hard to know how much is being spent and, therefore, drunk. Cash gave you a clear indicator.

and you should NOT be forced to sign up for a private surveillance company that will take your money above the asking price, take the merchant's money above the selling price, and tell the government + the highest bidder what you bought, what you paid and where you were (when).

In order to use a government's legal currency, someone should should just need a pulse. Nothing more. They shouldn't need to prove they are a citizen or have a "good" credit score. They shouldn't need to speak English or to afford or code a "smart" phone.

I’ve been trying to use cash more and it feels nice to be less surveilled/not have any of it skimmed off the top by a company, plus I think I am more careful about spending. You can see why those in power would hate it.

"NO CASH ACCEPTED" is a global crisis. I have seen this on three continents now. It's anti-poor, anti-youth, anti-immigrant and pro-surveillance. I had thought it was an American problem, then a Western one, but surveillance capitalism is taking over even the smallest transactions globally.

Point blank asking for a significant raise and title change at my day job this year was one of the hardest things I've ever done, but I've gotten so old and so tired and was so out of fucks that I did it.

And reader, I got it.
it is true (and yet one of the great secrets of the universe somehow, still?!) that one of the most successful ways I have ever found to get anything I wanted is just... to ask for it, out loud, somewhere that people who are in a position to give it to me can hear.
