By way of introduction: my name is Tony and I'm a former philosophy grad student. I'm mostly just here to get my fill of some faint approximation of reasonable discourse and, failing that, talking about punk rock/ska. Mostly a lurker, but feel free to throw me a follow if our interests align!

Let's all take a moment to read the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878. It's only one sentence.

I can't believe we have a Pope from Illinois. People from Chicago usually hate the Cardinals.

Lots of contemporary authoritarianism comes without trench coats and other dystopian imagery. It takes hold and spreads its tendrils as everyday life continues. Read my latest www.arcdigital.media/p/the-unbear...
The Unbearable Normality of Creeping Authoritarianism
The U.S. government is under attack from within, the Constitution isn't really in effect, but if you don't follow politics and aren't directly targeted, you might not notice

People are leaving Twitter because it’s not fun anymore and no one is obligated to be on a platform they don’t enjoy.

It’s not rocket science.

She really went for a trifecta of vile:

1) can't be equals
2) intentional misgendering
3) insinuation of a violent response

All whilst playing making claims of being bullied and gaslit & demanding to have her rights as a woman protected.

....Does the irony even need to be pointed out or....
And there you have it.

Nancy Mace comes out and says, "It's offensive that a man in a skirt thinks that he's my equal"

That is what is driving them so mad. That a transgender person, duly elected to represent 1,000,000 people, could ever be her equal.

I agree re: lack of engagement and the need to educate voters.

I'm curious, though, as to whether the balance, in your opinion, is dictated by the current state of affairs or whether that holds for all governance? I.e. in an idealized state would the ratio be more skewed toward actual governing?

Back in my poker days I lost a big pot to Jason Alexander before going to see his act. We ran into each other in the poker room after his set and I said, "Man, Jason, I must be the only guy here that actually paid to see your act!" (Obv implying that most tix were comped, not that it was bad lol)
Twitter is doing “best celebrity interactions” discourse so we should do WORST ones

not necessarily like that they were a jerk, just that the interaction itself was a fail on some level

like one time Robert Sean Leonard walked past me and I short-circuited so badly I spilled guacamole on myself

They say never to meet your heroes, so I settled for @devonkaysolutions.bsky.social instead.

Nah, but seriously, got to catch these guys twice opening for Streetlight and Big D in recent weeks and they were sick. Great band and greater people. Check em out when you can!
