Not for main characters. Those are...well, not planned, but I know they're gonna be together. I say that, but Kohaku (series after P&O) is going to surprise me. I can sense it 💀

ObiDai started as side characters and surprised me then. Haruki and Junpei surprised me this time around 🤭

Swaying a little, Daisuke passed the flask to Obito. His eyes landed on the High Priestess as she stepped up to the communal altar. She looked different; gaunt, exhausted, and almost frail as she ascended the three short steps. The right gust of wintry wind could’ve knocked her over. He nearly commented on it, but when he felt the cool metal of the flask in his palm again, he forgot to worry. There was a much prettier and far more interesting sight beside him, and by now, both were quite tipsy.

Like all Northern Nomads, Daisuke's dreams are SUPER vague visions of his future, and they stress him out a lot. Sometimes the dream realm also connects to the spirit realm for extra spice 🤣

Obito, on the other hand, doesn't dream at all (or if he does, he never remembers them)

But his lordship’s temper’s been worse. Spends most of the day cooped up, told his beloved to get lost, fired the magistrate—or, wait. That was a’fore all this.” “Can he do that?” Daisuke muttered to his partner. “Only if the Capital never finds out.”

Probably to no one's surprise, Obito and Daisuke spend holidays together, but Junpei and/or Shinta might swing by. As they get older, they're also usually working 😅 I think book 3's gonna have a scene like that 🥰

“Don’t touch the wares. Please,” the owner scolded from behind the table—if his tone could be called that; he sounded as though he wanted to be firm, but had no idea how. All conviction visibly drained from his face and posture when Daisuke turned to look at him, shocked. He’d just watched as this man had laughed with a delighted old woman who’d held a much more delicate ceramic frog before purchasing it. Timidly, the owner added, “I-it’s policy.” “Since when?” Obito’s unimpressed voice came from behind Daisuke. The stall’s owner froze, looking as if he’d seen a ghost.

I write 3rd omni (gasp! I know!), so I'm usually switching POVs as seems fit anyway. I try to keep it balanced.

I've written a couple from strictly one POV for practice, too, and they're alright, but I don't like the emotional distance *I felt* from one character over the other

“Fuck,” he swore at the sting from the first cut as he dragged the blade across his skin. It hurt, but it wasn’t enough to dull his storming emotions, so a second followed, this time loaded with his anger. Six fresh cuts decorated his shoulders, all much deeper than initially intended. The rag he usually cleaned himself up with was blotted with wet bloodstains by the time he finished, chest still heaving with the occasional, exhausted sob as he tossed it and the scalpel back in the drawer for now. His puffy eyes burned, and he could barely keep them open; he stumbled toward his bed with a hazy cloud looming in his mind. Sleep enveloped him as soon as his head hit the pillow.

Daisuke's incredibly softhearted for people he cares about. He sees himself as pretty callous because of how he left Kulako　, but he'd fight a god for loved ones.

Obito’s is funnier. He's good with kids! He's low-key afraid of them and avoids them, but they tend to like him 🤭

Mostly by feel (giggity), I guess. Sometimes it just makes sense to fade to black, or imply it just happened after a scene break. Other times it's just way more satisfying to show everything (especially because this is usually how Obito gets back at Daisuke for being a teasing brat 💀🤭)

Duels of Blood (*I* wanted to be romantic. *Daisuke* wanted to be a menace. Obito’s having none of it)
The room was still mercifully warm thanks to the coals still glowing in the woodstove. Daisuke kept his hands by it for a minute before padding over to the bed, where thick blankets and his partner awaited him. "Daisuke?" Obito shifted slightly. "I thought you were sleeping." "I will kick you out of bed if you put your cold feet on me." "Just my feet?" Daisuke couldn't stop a sly grin as he slid under the blankets and pressed himself close. Obito shivered at his frigid touch, intensifying a sudden need to tease him. Daisuke turned him onto his back with a light tug and crawled on top of him, relieved as his shivers slowly thawed in his partner’s embrace.

Daisuke's sense is...um. 😅 If he pays attention, it's usually fine. But if he gets distracted (always), he's lost and needs Obito to come help him 💀

Obito’s sense of direction is much sharper and more reliable. Even if he doesn't know where he is, he's good at figuring it out

“By the skin of your teeth, Daisuke,” Master Yujin murmured as he rolled the vial in his palm. “But it’s hard to argue with results—I hope you wrote this down.” He flinched, but Obito was quick to place a sheet of parchment in front of their superior. “I did. He was busy.” Master Yujin looked over the sheet, hummed, and placed it on top of the vials in the crate. Daisuke sighed with relief. Writing down how he’d figured out the antidote had been the last thing on his mind; whenever he thought of how easily the poison recipe had been stolen from under his nose, he couldn’t force himself to make a single brushstroke. Something feeling frighteningly close to affection wriggled in his chest.

Maybe the poisons room wasn't the best place for this. Obito’s last, frayed strand of rational thought all but begged him to listen to it, but it's persistence grew weaker with every passing second. As did his restraint. Daisuke was pinned beneath him on the work table, arms wrapped around his neck and legs locked around his waist. His back arched and another warm breath grazed Obito's ear when he bit and sucked Daisuke’s neck.

“You don’t need to be like that—we both know you’d kiss me if I let you.” Those forest green eyes locked onto Daisuke in such an inexplicably forceful way that it made his heart race and his body go still. Obito didn’t know what came over him. After enduring Daisuke’s teasing for so long, and playing back with shows of annoyance or quick comebacks, his self-control suddenly evaporated into nothing. Deciding it was time to meet the little pest on his level, and mercilessly, he closed the gap between them before bending toward Daisuke’s ear; their cheeks were so close to brushing, his skin prickled with warmth. “What if I would?” he asked, voice low, all but daring his partner to give him another smart-ass answer.

Names and traditions are (lovingly) borrowed from Japanese and Chinese cultures, so I'd guess the language spoken in-world is the same, but I’m not brave enough to insert phrases or anything like that 😅

Kinda tough, because I do like aspects of both. Especially the butterflies of a new relationship. But, I think I'm going to say established. I've realized that I really like to write kink (😅😬🤭🫢), and I'm way more comfortable with that when the couple's been together for a bit.
