Obito leaned over, voice low when he asked, “What is it?” Daisuke shook his head and fluttered his fan. Truthfully, he was mesmerized by the precision with which the wedding procession moved toward the altar. Every step was deliberate, not a single stitch was out of place on the young couple’s intricately embroidered clothing, and even the ways they interacted with guests and each other seemed a bit rehearsed. I forgot how seriously Giahatians take these, he thought. Really, it came as no surprise. This would be considered one of the bride’s few points of pride in all her life—to hell with her opinions—and both came from wealthy families. They couldn’t afford to be offensive, uncertain, or disorganized without risking that standing.

Duels of Blood (Daisuke impedes traffic and Obito’s ability to think)
“You did promise to behave.” “Admittedly, a huge mistake on my part. Sojiro’s probably loads of fun to mess with.” Obito rolled his eyes. When he didn’t answer, Daisuke whirled around with a flap of his damp cloak, eyes bright and grin full of mischief as he kept walking backwards. A few people complained at his obliviousness, but ultimately went around him without directly confronting him—typical for Kinumura’s locals. “Fine,” he told Obito, batting his eyelashes. “I’ll only bully you while we’re here.” Obito grabbed him by the shoulders and spun him around once more, ignoring his indignant yelp and how warm his own face became at the little pest’s teasing. “Stop that. We have work to do.”

I know Itsuki’s death has been hard on you, but our organization cannot function without competent agents. Am I clear?” “Explain Mika, then,” Obito blurted with a roll of his eyes as he closed the book and left it resting near his right hand. “That’s twice, Nakamura. Do you really want to see what happens when you mouth off three times in a row?” “...No, sir. My apologies.”

“What are you up to?” Obito warily asked. The question left his mouth often, but with good reason—while he could say it with immense affection, his partner was a menace. “Such accusations.” Daisuke grinned. “I’ll have you know, I became a man today.” Obito’s expression suggested he was curious, but too worried about the answer to pry any further. Snickering, Daisuke gathered his hair and pulled it back to show off the new piercing in his left ear, beaming with pride as he tilted his head to give his partner a better view. His upper ear was still red around the gold hoop and the ball clasp resting in his inner ear. Daisuke’s smile softened as he took Obito’s hand, guiding his fingers to delicately brush the pink and green feathers.

Daisuke's hair is long-ish (around the shoulder blades), black, and silky. He usually keeps it in a ponytail, but also likes half styles. He rarely lets it hang free if he's out and about.

Obito's hair is less complicated lol. It's a deep brown, soft, shoulder-length, and kind of choppy. 🧵?

A wave of energy rippled through the air. Wispy ropes of purple and black burst from Kanashimi’s clawed hand, restless and roiling until they amassed into a more circular form, which then rose slightly above the demon’s palm. As the tangled shadowy vines solidified into a glossy globe, Lady Shadow’s heart plummeted. Something wasn't right. “Kagura,” the demon began; a lump lodged in her throat—they’d never used that name with her before.“My resentment has grown so immense lately, it’s nearly unbearable. I fear I may not be able to control it much longer.”

Though in the privacy of their room with the guqin playing softly from afar, when Daisuke looped a necklace with a shard of rose quartz around Obito’s neck with trembling hands, then dipped his head so his partner could do the same, it only seemed right to trade at least one of the three ceremonial bows—the one meant for each other. No blessing that would never come was needed from their families, no promise that they’d never keep made to the heavens; only the truth about how they felt for one another mattered. A union, but without the baggage of marriage.

By now, Daisuke had grown quite accustomed to the finery with which nobles decorated themselves, but a sense of self-consciousness rolled through him at their presence. Neither man was particularly intimidating, but this was his partner’s father and eldest brother—heads of the family; they even carried themselves as such. He couldn’t help but feel small when standing before them. He glanced in Obito’s direction, desperate for reassurance. Wildly inappropriate as it might’ve been, he nearly burst out laughing when he realized his partner was giving him the same look.

“And you two have the necessary skills?” Although the incredulity in his voice was meant as an insult, he’d asked a fair question—more than Obito cared to admit. As the presiding lord of Kinumura, and ranking noble among the families in the northwest Valley, his father had every right to be concerned about the competence of those sent to help. When one considered the ever-present tension between the throne and the Nakamuras, it became more understandable. Still, Obito had to defend at least his partner, even if he didn’t have a hope of doing the same for himself. “My partner specializes in poisons and antidotes.” Obito purposely avoided mentioning that it was Daisuke’s experimental poison, blackwater, causing the issue in the first place. “You didn’t meet with Magistrate Fujio for the sake of socializing—you’re both worried about what will happen if this reaches Kinumura. Let us handle it.”

Yujin sighed as he set his cup of tasteless wine on the table after placing a card in front of him; he should’ve known better than to buy a bottle from the city’s cheaper markets. He threw a couple more coins on the table and waited for the general to draw, as well, unable to react when his friend beat him for the third round in a row. “I’m not sure what to do, Aki. The hitokiri murdered one of my boys a couple of weeks ago, so not only am I down an onmitsu, but I can’t find a proper replacement.” Aki and Yujin had lost plenty of soldiers over the years, but neither found it ever became more manageable, especially when fate stole the younger lives in their ranks. The General’s eyes lifted from his card to his friend, filled with genuine sympathy that Yujin solely trusted from him. “I’m deeply sorry to hear it. Do you know which assassin is responsible?”

Mika’s furious bloodshot gaze glared back at him. “You—!” Without a second thought, Daisuke raised his fist again. Just when it came down, black, wispy tendrils surrounded Mika until they consumed him, and he was gone without a trace, as if the ground itself had swallowed him. Daisuke doubled over in pain when he punched the cobblestones instead, clutching his hand and spitting out a few incoherent curses. Still stunned, Obito reeled in the kyoketsu-shoge’s chain, unable to take his eyes off where his cousin had been. It wasn’t until Daisuke let out a fifth “fuck” that he could look away, and crouched beside his partner to check on him. It was too dark to see if he’d broken any skin, but judging by the way things felt, he’d pulled back just enough to prevent an injury to his hand.

“Where were you yesterday? I had to spend half the day trailing Ewah and I didn’t even get to complain to anyone about it,” Daisuke whined. “I think I actually died of boredom at one point. Unfortunately, I came back and he was still there.” “You poor thing.” Obito rolled his eyes before handing off a small scroll, which was quickly unfurled once in his partner’s grasp. “I told you I’d be working on my part of the plan. If you were with Ewah, you should’ve been, too.” Daisuke’s next response was more distracted as he looked over the paper. “I did what I could, but it’ll really come down to Masaki and Yuki.” “I still can’t believe you involved those two. I hope you’re paying them well.” “About that—I’m going to need your help securing one of the things I promised them.” “I’m not sure I like the sound of that.”

Sojiro closed his eyes with a light sigh and placed his closed fan on the table. He folded his arms inside his sleeves, bracing himself, then gave the man across from him a rather disappointed look. "Since we can't come to agreement, I'm afraid there's no point in continuing this conversation." Ignoring the nobleman’s confused expression, he gracefully stood when heard the pavilion's curtain rustle behind him. "We'll take it from here," came Obito's voice. Followed by Daisuke's sly inflection. "Don't even think about running, Lord Horseshit. We'll catch you." Sojiro finally turned to give them each a stern glare. "Whatever you need to do, handle it quietly."

Duels of Blood (and two exhausted menaces)
They knew they weren’t moving anytime soon; they’d been traveling constantly since midsummer, and with the new intelligence they’d gathered in Kinumura, Shinta had pushed hard to make the two-week trek from the Wen Valley to the Capital a few days shorter. The soothing coolness of Obito’s room, along with the contrast of being comfortably warm against one another, and the lulling, familiar noises of the onmitsu dormitories during a late morning, was plenty of encouragement to seek some much-needed rest. Daisuke didn’t know whether he or Obito fell asleep the fastest, but when his eyes opened, he was greeted by freshly-fallen snow as far as he could see and the scent of crisp mountain air. He sat on a veranda facing a seemingly endless field of thriving higanbana; their crimson red petals looked like ribbons of blood against the full moon’s light and sea of powder-white before him.

Sensing bubbling, dreadfully familiar tension, Sojiro’s composure cracked slightly, and he gently touched Daisuke’s shoulder. “Daisuke, was it? This must be your first time in Kinumura. Why don’t we step outside for a moment and enjoy the sights?” “It’s raining,” Daisuke argued with a skeptical look. “Barely. Besides, I brought an umbrella.” “But, we—wait!” Obito could only watch in shock as his eldest brother showed a surprising amount of strength, and absconded with his partner, giving Daisuke no time to protest beyond a small yelp before he was dragged away. Unfortunately, it also meant he was now alone with his father. The air grew stiff and stagnant. Unable to bear it, Obito’s eyes slowly shifted toward Takato, who was already looking at him. Recognizing the disapproval in his father’s gaze, Obito begrudgingly spoke first; this wasn’t his silence to break.
