The domino effect from the tech industry’s $700 billion AI spending spree is diverting resources and attention from other sectors of the economy, making finding an electrician or a reasonably priced smartphone increasingly difficult.
The AI boom is so huge it’s causing shortages everywhere else

I don't say this often but: I'm so proud to be a climate and environment reporter. We cover an issue that is vitally important to humanity and the natural world. 14 of my climate colleagues at the Post were laid off today and I'm devastated.

Seriously, WHEREVER you are in the world, I recommend watching all of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s powerful & already famous speech at Davos.

Can’t underestimate its leadership importance.

Key line: “Middle powers must work together, because if we’re not at the table, we’re on the menu.”

🔺 Shifting focus from declared practices to measured outcomes on natural environments, given the frequent misalignment between #intentions - #actions - #outcomes;
🔺 Moving beyond adaptation alone, toward #mitigation and the #regeneration of socio-ecological systems. 6/6

Some avenues for future research:
🔺 In empirical analyses, moving beyond administrative boundaries toward nature-defined ones (e.g. ecosystems like #waterbasins);
🔺 Going beyond the “carbon tunnel” and understand how CC is connected with #biodiversity loss and other #planetaryboundaries; 5/6

3️⃣ Successful territorial adaptation is #collective.
No firm strategy works in isolation. Effective responses depend on social capital, strong local #communities, and dense connections among institutions, firms, and civil society. 4/6

2️⃣ #Adaptation goes far beyond technical fixes. It also involves migration, relocation of production, innovation, and trade. Crucially, adaptation is embedded in broader social, institutional, economic contexts that shape its feasibility and effectiveness. 3/6

1️⃣ #social impacts include #migration and #conflicts. economic impacts: productivity, employment, wages reduction and also changing sectoral specialization, and agglomeration economies. effects depend on exposure to climate events, & institutional quality, governance, industrial structures. 2/6

#Climatechange impacts are geographically uneven and #adaptation strategies need to be place-based.

On this #literaturereview I summarize the key learnings from #economicgeography literature & suggest ways forward 👇 1/6
