I like this framing a lot.

"Artificial connection to the collective subconscious" reminds me of the drummers in The Diamond Age. The motivations are even kinda similar if you squint.
So if you visualize LLMs as not "artificial consciousness" but "an artificial connection to the collective unconscious":

1. They become philosophically way more interesting
2. It's way more forgivable they suck at math
3. It becomes extremely clear they are infinitely less useful to capitalism
A thing I am starting to embody in my extremely weird healing journey, and that a lot of AI people don’t seem to get, is that consciousness is *by far* the least interesting or impressive part of human intelligence

Hi yeah this is your captain speaking. Our scheduled departure time for the rapture has been delayed due to paperwork. As soon as that paperwork is squared away we'll be on our way. Thank you for your continued patience.

I will not grieve people whose only connection to my life is through the wrongs they have done. I owe them nothing and I reserve the right to celebrate how their death makes my life an inherently better place. That doesn't make me their killer, that simply makes me someone they cannot wrong again.

My favorite induction cooktop trick is to pre-boil a pot of water then set it to the "warm and hold" setting. Then whenever I'm ready to start the pasta I just set it back to high. Bam instant boiling water.

You ‘run the gamut’ and ‘run the gauntlet.’

You don’t ‘run the gambit.’

gamut = entire range or series

gauntlet = severe trial

Gambit = Alpha-level mutant who can convert potential energy to kinetic energy

you have a serious problem.

I can barely make it through Hamilton, both because it's a powerful show and musicals in general make me really emotional.

But also because it reminds me of the 2015-2016 Metafilter politics megathreads where every title was a Hamilton lyric. There was _so much_ optimism in those threads.

Hey kids! Let's play the avocado game!

Here's how you play the avocado game: you cut an avocado open and take a taste. If you don't gag, that's a good avocado! You get one point!

Current score: -3

Stress baking! Yeah, that's the ticket!

Hm.

All I have is a boxed lemon bar mix and some frozen cookie dough.

That'll have to be enough.
