We have a 2016 Nissan Rogue that we mostly use for little hauling tasks. Eventually we'll be done with it and a PHEV Maverick would slot right into its role.

Alternatively (hypothetically) use Usenet instead of torrents. It can't leak your data to outside observers unintentionally, most (all?) providers pledge to not keep logs, and even if they did pulling the data for private use without sharing is not a crime (in the US, ymmv, etc)

parallel port is _bananas_. I would imagine it'd happen over a CAN bus or something but I guess if you're a car maker you want to make life as difficult as possible for someone trying to do that thing.

It's extremely capital intensive on a level not seen since the railroad buildout. That implies investors, and not just savvy ones that think like you, you also need the dumb money. Investors demand at least a prospect of a path toward ROI. The public APIs and the "any day now" rhetoric are a sop.
