On the weakness of state terror: once ppl internalize the regime's lawless brutality, that they are no safer in their homes than in the streets (& vice versa), and that their unwavering defiance is what confounds & disempowers the regime, they also realize they have nothing to lose but their fear.
This administration is cooked. Literally no one is scared of them.

Taking billions of US tax dollars to do it all. And you're villified if you protest that.

Is this the Israeli military?
Or ICE?

Yes:

When I fist landed in the US many moons ago, the very book I was assigned to read as a graduate student was Tocqueville's Democracy in America. I often think of that experience as a metaphor to learning "how to read America". And yet, whenever there is a major political crisis there,

One thing I haven't come across in the analysis is how much of the Donroe doctine should be read a move within the authoritarian turn? Would the US government pursue a move back in time in terms of their geopolitical agenda if their formidable opponents had a more liberal program?

I loved it when @emmavigeland.bsky.social said to @gianmarcosoresi that having an argumentative stance on an issue is like uttering words of endearment to her bec she has lawyer parents and so that’s 2nd nature to her. That line would have saved me so many relationships if I had it 20 years ago.

Even before AI, I curiously traced back a reference to a paper I had published and found out that the prof citing it was using my paper for the exact contrary point to what I was arguing. what would be her laziness and stupidity (sorry not sorry) back then is now becoming the system itself. Omg
a fair number of folks posting their shock that citing without reading is a common practice & welp—yeah, it is

Does it happen more often in some fields than others? I think yes—there are disciplinary differences in the rhetorical purpose of citation that do shape the actual practice significantly

I think this post nails the actual problem, for researchers at least—AI hallucinations would simply not be a problem in academic work if we’d not normalized citation-as-signaling rather than actual engagement—you can only cite a fake paper if you’re not in the habit of reading the papers you cite
