I'd call the govt mime artists, but that would be an offence to sign language.
Thus, this bill is for performative purposes only -- to provide for *legislative* recognition of English as an official language, over-and-above the current constitutional recognition of English as an official language under custom and practice.

The great Douglas Adams, a nerd ahead of the curve, called his book on preservation Last Chance to See. There's no going backwards. That'll be the arrow of time.
I said "Paul, I bet you $1000 there will be no 'functionally-equivalent' moa running around in ten years." We shook on it, witnessed by the Friends of the Museum audience. The talk will be on YouTube but not the questions, so you'll have to take my word that this happened.

To be blunt, this is nothing but racist snowflakes wasting valuable lawmaking time. Talk about vice signalling.
To spell it out.

English already is an official language of New Zealand -- as the explanatory note records -- by dint of custom and practice.

This point was previously clarified by govt officials when NZSL was added as our 3rd official language (see advice to select committee below).

The NZSL Bill was passed into law in 2006. The vote in Parliament was unanimous, except for the two Act MPs who voted against. NZSL was banned from the school curriculum for 99 years, from 1880 - after the Council of Milan dictat - until 1979. Don't talk to me about the English language.

The cheapest bread at Pak n Save went from $1.25 to $1.99 a loaf. 58 percent is just an average.
#nzpol Prices for basics are rising again at a rate much faster than wages, new data from Stats NZ shows. 70% of workers got a pay rise less than 3% last year and 44% got no pay rise at all. Food prices rose 4.6% overall, with the price of white bread rising 58% this year. A 🧵

Always scared the piss out of me in Palmy. There's nowhere for the water to go *waves at alluvial floodplain*
Uh...

I mean i guess that makes sense but it must be terrifying for anyone who lives there

Probably speaking to the wrong audience on this platform, but here goes. NEVER DRIVE THROUGH FLOODS. Had a mate who did it once and he was very bloody lucky, although the Toyota Levin never recovered. Also, caveat emptor on buying second hand cars after any flooding.

Go, Tim. I fear UK's democratic deficit might devolve into some weird shit. Makes me glad we fluked electoral reform in the 1990s here in NZ.
I never really sign stuff. But this was different. It's not about trying to facilitate or block a particular party's route to power. It's about an electoral system that's unsuited to the political realities we face today and risks giving us government after government with no convincing mandate.

That's news to me. So it's basically ODT and The Press as Asterisk and Obelix fighting against those crazy Roman press barons?
The Press and Stuff are separate companies, now - we have no shared staff or anything like that. We’re basically competitors.

Everything about this confuses me. Is this the same Transmission Gully that has roadworks for Africa into the foreseeable future? There's wishful thinking, then there's unicorn shitting rainbows if anyone's thinking of going 110 over the Wainui saddle.
Hey Wellington peeps important PSA on the Transmission Gully speed limit change.
When you get to the bottom of the big hill at Paekākāriki the speed limit DROPS BACK TO 100 for a bit. They've been intensively patrolling that stretch between Paekākāriki and Raumati and issuing lots of tickets.

I think one thing people outside Minnesota don't understand is that after Good and Pretti were killed by feds while observing, the most normal people you could imagine have made peace with the fact that they could be next, and they are still out there because they say it's the right thing to do.
“If I am killed doing this, throw my body at the White House, martyr the shit out of me & raise hell. Do not be sad. Do not think I would do anything differently. I would do it over & over again — this is too important to sit down & shut up and not do anything.” www.mprnews.org/story/2026/0...

Fuck a duck. That's what PNCC charged my old man to do at the Centennial Lagoon in Palmy back in the day. Trev and his shotgun blowing the crap out of dozens of mallard ducks in a cull.

That's fucking weird. Me so old, I remember being at an NZ Republic meeting with DPF, Lewis Holden, Savage, Dean Knight and others. Now DPF wants to swear allegiance to Oz. Is it coz there's now more NZers in Oz than NZ?
