You could create the same graphic for full screen pop-up advertising on websites and make them look like ultra-rapid technology adoption when really they were just baked unavoidably into the internet

I write middle-grade whodunnits, so you might want to dismiss my opinion out of hand. But I think cosy games/crime sometimes miss the fact that blankets are only cosy when it's cold outside. A world without conflict / a story without stakes isn't cosy, it's just safe.

Incidentally, earlier this year Microsoft announced it was investing $80 billion in AI. EIGHTY BILLION DOLLARS.

They gobbled up half the games industry in a disastrous acquisition spree that never should've been allowed to happen, then saw something shinier and immediately fumbled the gaming bag.

I do have one criticism of the ending of clair obscur.

The game is about grief. All of the characters grieve, it's central to their character and their plot. I'm not gonna do a full analysis here (though I might at some point lol) but for the most part, while the game has antagonists, it doesn't really have a "bad guy", not when you start to see their motives. Renoir does not want his family to die. Maman wants to keep the memory of her son alive. Papa just wants his daughter and wife back. Verso doesn't want to keep living a half life. All of these are real and true and morally justifiable motives. All except "bad end" Maelle, and that's where the story and the moral of the story kind of slam into each other at full force. For those who don't know (and you HAVE been warned), the two endings are "give up on the painted world, allow it to be destroyed" and "remain in the painting." The former is the thematically "correct" ending and I see why. The point is that you have to let go. The problem is that it's been established that the world of this game is Real to the people in it. There are a lot of SENTIENT, LIVING things in this world. So the question becomes: "should god destroy the universe to overcome her trauma?" And I don't think that's a very good question to ask, actually, not when you want to write a story about grief. The implication is that none of the painted people are "real" but they all sure do grieve and feel and experience the world around them. The idea of restoring the people in the painting is framed (lol) EXCLUSIVELY as a selfish act, and the ending then paints (tee hee) Maelle as a sort of monstrous controlling figure keeping them alive against their will, which feels, you know, thematically consistent, I GUESS, but again ignores the autonomy and existence of the REAL ACTUAL PEOPLE in this painted world. It's supposed to be about letting go but that one scene feels like it disregards a lot of what it did to argue that sometimes we need these escapes. In short: The game has a LOT of empathy for those who grieve. It understands that we make mistakes, that we are scared, that there are things we are not ready to give up. It extends a hand of love and empathy to all kinds of grief, all kinds of pain. Except to the main character, who is wrong and evil for not doing a genocide to get over her brother's death. And that doesn't sit right with me. The implication is that the only reason she doesn't want to kill everyone in Lumière is because she wants to dance them around like puppets instead of, as she literally puts it herself, "live the life we should have lived, together." I'm sorry but that doesn't sit right with me. It feels... cruel? Callous? The second reason it fails is because obviously Maelle is also kind of the stand-in for the player. Gustave is to us what Verso is to Maelle. We grieve Gustave and so, in the bad end, we get him back, because we, too, are incapable of letting go, instead consoling ourselves with a fake simulacrum of the real thing. Except that none of these characters are real. They're literally all fictional. Gustave is not less real at the end than he is at the start, nor are either of THOSE two less real than, like, real-world Maelle. They're all fictional. Gustave is a simulacrum of a simulacrum of a simulacrum. And that's where the medium and the narrative crash into each other. This is a story that demands you act as though the world it takes place in is real, but only the outside world, not the one inside it, but there is nothing to differentiate the two. Other than Maelle literally only having a voice in the painted world, all characters are the same. Am I supposed to think that a world in which Maelle is shunned and voiceless is superior because the game has told me it is "real", that her overcoming her grief is worth giving up her claimed freedom? So yeah, I think the game has given me a lot to chew on (I grieve a lot :3) but at the end of the day I'm sticking with the bad ending because the "good" ending is, in my opinion, a little vapid. It's five minutes of someone putting flowers on a grave and then remembering all the people she let die so she could grow as a person, I guess. Other than that, yeah, probably GOTY for me and one of the best RPG's I've had the pleasure of playing.
