I absolutely love the latest entry in our new North American music column
My absolute fave MaxelleTalena has her first piece up at The Quietus this week and it’s a doozy: trü underground nyc noise and pop narcotics, w/ H20 and Michael Rappaport slander thrown in for taste. I guarantee that this is the stuff not covered anywhere else. thequietus.com/quietus-revi...

2000 or so words on my 150 favorite albums from 1986 + questionable claims I made in a famous Creem profile I wrote about the Beastie Boys back then, such as whether metal or rap had a better year & were major labels as bad as I thought, & how come I left out that Prince album everybody loves now.

I’m doing this reading on Sunday with a bunch of people who are half my age and twice as smart as me so come laugh and jeer at the display I will put on! Also not sure what I’ll read as I’ve never been cheated on (too handsome).

Being cleverly petty AND righteous in that pettiness is honestly 🧑🏻‍🍳💋
Mamdani quoted Mario Cuomo *and* referenced the Good Cuomo’s 1984 speech about Reagan’s “shining city on a hill.” Not sure if people are fully appreciating our new mayor’s scope of vision & history, love of language & heritage, or his apparent willingness to put that knife in a motherfucker.

it’s disintegration discourse season already??? Great! I’ve never gotten so many abusive posts from hammer & sickle avatars as when I said on Twitter that Disintegration is indirectly/directly why so much alt metal is atmospheric mush. (I like disintegration tbc… but boy has it had a bad influence)

I hear there's a "meme" going around (not that I've seen much meming myself) regarding favorite albums of 198-NINE. The number. Sound of the funky drummer. That said, here's mine, plus 2100+ words on the end of history, end of the '80s, end of welfare as we know it, a Joshua Clover book, and more.
Best Albums of 1989
Most of the music Joshua Clover (a/k/a the late Associate Professor Formerly Known as Jane Dark) writes about in his 2009 book 1989 did not technically come out in 1989.

I finished drafting my 2nd book. It’s about someone who lived through the worst depravity the CIA & the US military could inflict; & also about his dad, who came under FBI investigation by association.

Next Thursday at Pete’s Candy Store in Brooklyn, I’m going to debut a chapter. Check it out:
Come Hear An Excerpt From THE TORTURE AND DELIVERANCE OF MAJID KHAN
Next week, I'll be reading from the manuscript of my forthcoming second book. Come out to Pete's Candy Store on Thursday, Nov. 6

Good stuff. Geese isn't for me, but I've been a lil confused by the stray shots of discourse flying by. This helped orient me on that.

But, to be fair the stuff I'm obsessed with right now is like, Skinhead, the D4 comp that just came out, and an old John Cale record, so I'm far from the target.
