"If you watch an episode of Cheers, you might hear references to foreign filmmakers, to classical musicians, to Russian novelists. The level of assumed knowledge back then was far greater; now, TV is rarely adventurous in its allusions."

my mentor was a historian on war & revolution and when asked to share the single most important short piece of text he'd encountered in his life, he shared this.

it's well worth the read. i carry it with me
and a cheeky text drop right now, as a present

this chapter by Tolstoy is very short and easy to read but will forever change how you understand the world and your vulnerability to the machine of bureaucratic dehumanisation:

I often think about Jonathan Cooper's posts about TLOU2, that the studio ran out of seasoned game animators because its reputation was so bad and thus had to hire film folks who had to be taught how to put games together.

Condé Nast forgot to renew the trademark for Gourmet and so a group of journalists grabbed it and are relaunching the food magazine as a worker-owned co-op. Love it. [gourmetmagazine.net]

Now that everyone is going back to work, it's a good time to remind you I still urgently want to be your next writer of things. Email hetfeldmalindy@gmail.com or DM me for my portfolio. Happy New Year!
Hi everyone, I'm urgently looking for any work. I'm a writer and narrative designer, I offer game consultations and mock reviews, I localise between German and English, I can write copy. If it needs words, I'll do it! Here's some games I've written on in the past:

Genuinely one of EOTY lists I've personally been looking forward to 👏 Played three out of 10 games (Nubby and Butcher's Creek) from the list (two of 'em) inspired by Artemis' amazing write-ups.

Still, have a feeling It Takes War would be on the list if you've gotten around to playing it(!)
My EOTY roundup for Stop Caring is now live, a bit more informal than the regular essays I provide,

I wrote about my 10 favorite games of 2025 and award one the coveted title of Stop Caring GOTY

I also wanted to take a moment to thank all the contributors and supporters in the beginning :)

the only way to write something good is to write something bad over and over again until it becomes good. outsourcing all the writing something bad parts to a machine means you didn't write the good thing on the other end (if it's even good)

Since I'm in the Baltics, we're pretty late with the whole Geese discourse. But seeing multiple Geese memes in the last few days (plus P.T.A. filming frontman's Carnagey Hall concert, for some reason), I went to my go-to music critic to find out what the deal is, and boy, it did not disappoint.

I think it's worth pointing out that very few video-game companies are as transparent as Shovel Knight maker Yacht Club Games, and I appreciate that the studio was so candid about their story and why their next game, Mina the Hollower, has taken so long
