Stability of status is what enabled my parents to plan for the future and to give me a proper education. I took part in the parliamentary debate on Indefinite Leave to Remain to emphasise the importance of this stability for immigrant families who are already here.

Today's GDP figures show a much needed pickup in real GDP per capita - 2025 was the first year this measure grew for three years. In April, energy bill reductions from the 2025 Budget will come into effect, tackling inflation and bringing the cost of living down.

I was on BBC Radio 4 last night discussing what the government needs to do in the coming years.

For me, it's the focus on the cost of living – whether it comes to rail fare freezes, energy bills, food, rent and mortgage costs going down because we're getting inflation under control.

Almost a decade and a half since I was one of its founders, I’m glad to see @rethinkecon.bsky.social play a huge role in educating young economists across the world. Great to speak to Matthew in his new piece in @theguardian.com about Rethinking Economics:

Turning inward to a leadership contest now would be both wrong and counterproductive when there is still so much vital work ahead. Our focus should remain on delivering the change voters asked for, not distracting ourselves from it.

I first met the Palestinian Ambassador Dr Husam Zomlot before I became an MP, and I’ve met with him several times since then to discuss the crisis in Gaza. (1/3)

Today, on Holocaust Memorial Day, we remember the six million Jewish people who were brutally murdered under Nazi persecution.

I’ve signed the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment- we must never allow antisemitism and hatred to take root in our society.

The Tribune Group is one of the largest groups of Labour MPs in Parliament. @drbeccycoopermp.bsky.social and I spoke to PoliticsHome about why we got involved and what we’d like to do in 2026 – working together on policy, campaigning for our members, and a big 60th anniversary party!

Today in Parliament I asked the government to help crack down on property management companies who are charging unfair and expensive fees to residents.

In 2025, I heard from more than 650 residents with complaints about their property management agencies.

My old adopted dog Haohao began his life on a street corner – we were lucky to find each other because I think we significantly improved each others’ lives! Our government’s new Animal Welfare Strategy will deliver some of the strongest animal welfare reforms in a generation.

The Labour Tribune Group of MPs turns 60 this year. We have a proud tradition, rooted in the trade union movement, of standing for solidarity, fairness and shared prosperity. I’m honoured to be on our executive committee as secretary. Here’s our vision for the economy in 2026:

Really glad to see the Government is looking at new measures on rogue property management companies and unadopted estates, two issues I’ve been campaigning hard for in Parliament over the past year and a half! (1/2)

This budget has brought down the cost of living, especially for working families. That’s what we need to do in order to get our economy back on track.

We need to look at the bigger picture when it comes to the UK’s public finances. This budget starts to rebuild the stability of our country’s finances, which is why we saw a positive reaction from investors to this budget.

We now know that the 2010s were a lost decade for economic growth and productivity - characterised by low public and private investment.

As my former Treasury Committee colleague says, our economic forecasts should properly count the benefits of spending and the damage of cuts.
The OBR has been making us poorer for over a decade.

They've underestimated the impact of public spending (cuts) on growth.

That has helped lead to a doom loop:

Cuts -> Lower growth -> lower revenues -> missed borrowing target -> more cuts etc.

Great to see that a proper tax on online gambling has been included in the budget today. The Treasury Select Committee’s recent report proposed this as a way to encourage people to spend less time gambling on predatory slot algorithms, while also raising revenue. (1/2)

1 in 10 women have experienced stalking, sexual assault or relationship abuse in the past year alone, according to the ONS. The government has set itself the mission of halving that figure in a decade. To do so, we have to make sure women’s voices are heard. (1/2)

Today, on Transgender Day of Remembrance, we remember all those who we have lost to transphobia.

Trans young people are the most at risk of suicide and violent crime. Shamefully, hate crimes against trans people hit a record high in 2023, and we've continued to see hate spread since then. (1/2)
