It's a fair point. My points:

1) This is the worst affordability on record. Just 1/3 of people feel comfortable. Less than during austerity.

2) Long-term drivers of low affordability (post-industrial fall in good jobs & lack of housing) mean people don't see a way they can afford a decent future
We've had cost of living crises before which did not lead to today's loss of faith in democracy among so many. We also know this by looking at other countries. There is a far wider story of discontent --->
People are losing faith because they cannot afford the basics 💰

We are facing an affordability crisis because we are dependent on fossil fuels

APPG member @jeevunsandher.bsky.social highlighted that the UK’s dependence on fossil fuels has led to an affordability crisis and asked how our transition away from fossil fuels will tackle the cost of household energy head on.

The affordability crisis is *also* a good jobs crisis

Around 40% of full-time jobs pay less than £35k - the bare minimum needed to support a family

If we want to make life affordable, we also need to (directly) create more good jobs

Want to know why we'll always trade more with Europe than the Rest of the World?

Distance.

Countries trade more with economies that are closer.

Just one in three of us felt financially comfortable in 2024 - a record low.

That's lower than during the financial crisis and austerity when half of us felt comfortable.

This is (one reason) there's so much anger. This is what we must fix.

Getting to Net Zero is cheaper than letting the planet burn. Twice as cheap in fact.

If we do nothing, climate change will cost us 15% of global GDP. Getting to Net Zero limits those costs to 7%.

The Navigation Inn is a wonderful pub in Barrow 🎄🍺

Such a homely feel. No. 27 on my pub tour.

Farage and Polanski have something in common. They are both wrong about Britain.

Inflation falling faster than expected: Good News

The bond rate also (unsurprisingly) fell: Also Good News

Because bond rate = investment demand + inflation + political risk

For is, we must focus on the affordability, climate and military crises before us

We are facing three crises: affordability, the climate and war in Europe

We can, and will, tackle them all

We must not make the same mistake politicians made in the 1930's

We must prevent another war in Europe by preparing for it

At this time of growing division and anger, we should remember what defines and unites Britain.

Our country is strongest when we're united.

When our different communities come together to build a common nation.

We have the highest energy bills in the G7 because we're dependent on natural gas.

So yes, we're investing in solar, wind, and nuclear to get those prices down.

And yes we're investing to upgrade the grid too.

And I’m disgusted by where Reform and the Conservatives are today.

This Budget is good for growth 💪

We have inherited the worst wages since Napoleon and the worst growth performance out of Covid. There is a huge amount to fix but it's going to get better.
