When did cassette tapes go and get all pretty like this?

Hey, it's Random Game Saturday, so here is Electroplankton for the Nintendo DS. More of a music toy than a game, really, but fun thing is fun.

Picked it up via @japanretrodirect.bsky.social -- great shop!

It's the intro to Highway to Hell by AC⚡DC, but the "oi oi oi oi" parts keep growing in their chorus until it's just your speakers clipping between the riff.

Someone spent a lot of time making and uploading these 4k Aikatsu videos to YouTube so that I can crop off the edges and play them on an old TV.

The rain rotted house on the dead end of Baytree old bitter lady

sits caddy corner to the aftershock from the Quarry

She says "America's a spoiled child that's ignorant of grief"

but then she gives out full sized candy bars on Halloween

Actually there is (at least) one rendering issue here. See if you can find it!
Finally got Wrecking Crew levels rendering correctly. What an annoying layout algorithm they made for themselves.

Oh my God these concrete ladders. If you stack two of them, you have to change not only the middle tile, but also the bottom tile of the top one and top tile of the bottom one. I am so angry on behalf of these coders. Dumb requirements ruining a clean algorithm.
So check this screenshot from Wrecking Crew for the Famicom. In the middle, I have a bunch of ladders. Do you see how the floor above them changes depending on the item above it?

This greatly complicates what would otherwise be a pretty easy rendering algorithm, and I'm sure the coders were pissed.

For #cibsunday I present the Famicom Datach. It was a device you could plug into the cartridge slot to add a barcode reader. It also had its own tiny cartridge slot for its tiny game carts.

The pack-in title was a Dragonball Z game, hence why Goku is everywhere.

Grabbed a screen recording of my Excitebike killscreen track running on a real Famicom. Enjoy!

It's 2am, I need to stop looking into Famicom tape data formats and go to sleep.

I think I have Wrecking Crew's format figured out, though.

I mean, they did steal the music, but $151,000 per song? Seriously, how out of touch with reality do you have to be to throw out a number like $13 trillion?

You (yes, you!) can use the knowledge and tools found within my new article to master the Famicom Excitebike tape data format and make your own dumb Excitebike levels!

Or I guess you can make good, playable levels that bypass the built-in editor's restrictions? You do you.

So I found myself wanting to add previews for Excitebike tracks to my Family Basic Tape tool. I assumed the level format would be documented online somewhere, but I wasn't able to…
