THE LOST CITY (2017)

A board used as a palette which became a scene reminiscent of a Lovecraft story...not so much of a palette gremlin as a palette snowscape.

Cresting a ridge, two explorers take in the view of an ancient, alien city nestled in an arctic mountain range. Intricate spires rise out of a mist of windblown snow. Between the angled peaks of mountains, the sky radiates aurora-like waves rendered in white and gray-blue.

THE CHESSMEN OF MARS (1979)

"As Gahan entered his square, U-dor leaped toward him with drawn sword with such fury as might have overborne a less skilled and powerful swordsman." 1/4
A man in sweeping red cloak assaults a warrior draped in black, who pivots toward him as if caught by surprise. Face etched with rage, the aggressor draws back his sword arm as he dwarfs his opponent in size and ferocity. His advance is aggressive with his limbs aligned all in diagonals. Knees bent and both feet off the ground, he springs into his attack. The sweeping arc of his ornate handguard echoes the delicate filigree of his headpiece. In the background, men wearing feathered plumes on their heads—either red or black—stand among the orange and black checkered squares of the Martian stadium floor as if they are chess pieces on a board. One warrior takes a knee while another is bent at the waist, trying to catch his breath, propping himself on his sword with point in the ground. The bodies of defeated chessmen crumple where they fell as all attention turns to the main combatants.

A MEMORY OF LIGHT (2012)

I was honored to paint the cover image for the final book in the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, but it was a daunting prospect given the massive backstory of 14 books written over a span of 20+ years. 1/6

Books designed to be read only by human eyes are different from books designed to be read by machines, which is why Google will tell you that the phrase “shake my booty” can be found in an 1863 English translation of Don Quixote.

In the left column, we read in part “thou hast hit the point, Sancho, which can alone shake my resolution”, and on the right “thy share of the booty would would have been at least the emperor’s crown of gold”; by coincidence, these align so that the phrase “shake my booty” can be read across the columns.

12/ Tech bros are banking on this being the future of labor. Anything their sales team can convince a corporate buyer about AI trumps what would actually help consumers or even that corporation's actual workforce. They want to fire as many people as they can and replace them with AI to save money.

WAVE (1994)

Of all the paintings hanging in my home, this one probably elicits the most comments. It's also a good example of why I am reluctant to say too much about my work. Some people are frightened by it, some view it as peaceful...
An exponential curve expressed as a massive wave of green-blue water that climbs to vertical against a sky of puffy lavender clouds. Light breaks through the cloud cover just over the horizon casting a flat glare across rippling water before the wave climbs. Fin-like ridges emerge running up the wall give the water turbulence and dimension.

THE WELL OF SHIUAN (1977)

One of the most intriguing aspects to the character Morgaine created by C.J. Cherryh is her spell-sword. 1/3
A warrior with arms strapped behind his back stares up at white haired sorceress rearing back on her white horse. Sitting back in the saddle, she holds out her sword. Blue energy ripples along the blade and a rift opens showing through to stars. The sky is a dark swirl of blue and purple behind her—although bright sunlight warms the horizon. It's unclear at first whether Morgaine is attacking or freeing the man. He wears only a long loin cloth, peaked helm, and boots. There's a blood bandage wrapping his upper arm. Morgaine wears a breast plate with chain beneath and banded armor over her bare thighs. Her pure white cape billows, an echo of the chaotic sky.

ELRIC AT THE FORGE OF FOREVER (2019)

When I tossed out the old container of paints used to do the cover painting for "Words of Radiance", it landed upside down in my wastebasket on a piece of paperboard I had been using as a palette for something else. 1/2
Elric stands on an outcrop of rock with skulls at his feet. He wears a black hooded cloak trimmed in gold and jeweled bracers. He cradles Stormbringer as the length of the sword glows purple. Behind him is a stretch of water that gives way erupting jets of lava.
