"three chords and blessed noise" was how Lenny Kaye described the earliest days of the Patti Smith Group. I have a new booklet/mega-zine out about seeing a week of shows on November's Horses 50th Anniversary tour:

Really excited to retire my original run ‘95 Dylan Unplugged pressing for this forthcoming reissue (with “Love Minus Zero/No Limit” finally added on the US version)! Fingers crossed that we’re one step closer to both nights coming out via the Bootleg Series. Pre-orders up now for February!

When she was young, Sinéad O’Connor spoke to her grandparents’ piano. The ancient instrument, its keys “yellowed like her grandpa’s teeth,” spoke back in haunted tones.

I’ve got a new essay up, complete with a voiceover narration, about ghosts, the Divine Feminine, and spiritual protest.

What a truly heavenly read from the fantastic @nikostratis.com! In the summer of ‘94 I was a 14-year-old part-time Kroger bag boy who couldn’t believe I got to hear R.E.M., Green Day, Meat Puppets, STP, and others “at work” (I can still hear the “KRGR Kroger Radio” jingle in my head to this day).
"A song like this, built of stories and theories and wild conjecture, means everything to those who hear it day after day." ICYMI, new @pastemagazine.bsky.social column started yesterday, about working in a grocery sore in the 90s, and Toadies "Possum Kingdom"

I've had David Bowie on the mind all week, between the 10th anniversary of "Blackstar" and the forthcoming anniversary of his passing. Shared some thoughts -- and a new playlist to start the year -- below.

Stoked to dig into @jonbern.bsky.social’s new book on Justin Townes Earle. I was lucky enough to interview JTE a half-dozen times over the years and each chat devolved into talk about the Cubs, Billie Holiday, or Nirvana’s Unplugged. Filming his guitar-playing in person was a legit force of nature.

Hard to explain exactly why but this already awesome album always jams a bit harder for me on a Friday morning. Though I’ll admit, even as a tracklist purist, I always start on the “Allegro” side and then flip back over to the “Adagio” side.

Wonderfully sage advice from @sydney-bauer.com (plus “Just put on an R.E.M. record and vibe” is evergreen wisdom that always guarantees a soul-level mood enhancement, especially Document, Monster, or Fables)
Feel like the vibe here has gotten “stayed too long at your folks place during the holiday work break but still have 72 hours before work starts.”

Just put on an R.E.M. record and vibe. Also work started two days ago.

Was wanting to revisit this ‘95 Zeppelin tribute (STP, 4 Non Blondes, Sheryl Crow, Tori Amos, Duran Duran, Blind Melon, and others) but I seem to have misplaced my 8-track player! (This is one of my favorite ‘90s promo items and I’m pretty sure it’s just restickered w/o holding the actual songs)

One fair way to get a little bump of post-holiday buzz is to spin an utterly phenomenal EP that just so happens to also contain one of the greatest holiday tracks of all time. (Also having the “Square Pegs” theme song on here guarantees quite the leveling-up listening experience).

First pre-work vibe set of the new year goes to one of my favorite ‘90s comps of all time. B-sides and other rare gems from Nirvana, The Sundays, Hole, Sonic Youth, Weezer, that dog., Counting Crows, Beck (during his classic early stoner acoustic blues phase), and so many more. Pure GenXtacy!

Best version of "In the Pines" -- and there are so many great versions of that old song -- came from the Nirvana Unplugged. Best Nirvana song too, even though it's a cover. There is something deep and primal in their rendition. I'm glad I grew up when Lead Belly was covered on mainstream TV.

I rarely repost my old stories but if you’re into a 1983 Knight Rider-themed Christmas quasi-rap 7” vinyl novelty single with connections to Alanis Morissette, The Golden Girls, Mac Tonight, Boy Meets World, Michael Jackson, and more… then have I got a story for you!

The 1980s were possibly the most fertile decade for the consumerist cash-grab intersection between notable pop culture IPs and novelty Christmas music.

Promo or not, this is one of the raddest ‘90s holiday comps in my collection: Juliana Hatfield, Bad Religion, Daniel Johnston, Victoria Williams, Evan Dando, Tori Amos, and (because it was the ‘90s) Collective Soul and Hootie. The Daniel Johnston artwork on the front is a really cool touch as well.
