I’ve been staying with family during the big winter storm. How many game nights, movie nights, story shares, or meaningful conversations have been snuffed out or never started by the advent of the smartphone?

Yes, I’m aware of the irony of posting this via smartphone.

Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes! 🎉 It’s been a busy day so far between juggling my freelance gig + getting ready for the winter storm + treated to dinner with my folks tonight. My birthday wish is for my family and friends to stay safe, warm, & fed during this gross weather.

I'm a pretty firm believer that nobody in a modern civilized country should have to go without food, shelter, or healthcare. That should be the baseline for every citizen in this country, and I'll never understand why we aren't all aiming for that.

On an intense deadline grind over the next couple of days but the “Escape 2000” episode of MST3K keeps the spirits high. The movie is a perfect fit for the format:

✅ Rock dumb yet incomprehensible at times
✅ Cliche-ridden characters
✅ Super-violent
✅ Dubbed
✅ Nihilistic ending
✅ Rockin’ soundtrack

Wonderful news! The first several seasons of The X-Files still hold up as top-tier television.

It's under 26 minutes long.
Dr. Seuss + Boris Karloff + Chuck Jones.
It's perfect. It's on a ton of streaming services.
And it'll make your day so much better.

Do yourself a favor and Grinch it up.

"Klaus" continues to be one of the absolute GREATEST holiday films of all time and it's criminal that Netflix won't put it on Blu-ray.

The xerox era of Disney made me fall in love with the craft of animation because my child brain could comprehend the dozens of penstrokes made by absolute masters. People dunk on the look cause you can pick out the artist's hand but I think it's fucking beautiful. We've sanded down art too much.
I love when I can see the work in a piece of art. Practical effects in film, brush strokes on canvas, strange sounds in music, "impossible" visuals in games. It puts me in conversation with the artist. That's why - ethics aside - art created with AI is just so disappointing. There's no work to see.

it breaks my heart every single time people i like and admire just say the most fatalistic, doomer-ass things with a grin, as though that helps anything.

To my fellow artists and creatives: Love yourself enough to keep trying, learning, pivoting if needed, and never give up. Humans have been creating and sharing art since the early days of our species. It’s an essential part of the human experience.

If you can… give us work, we need proper long term support. Trans folks, especially trans women, are the most likely personnel in a company to get let go first or not hired at all.

Beyond that… actually support and show up for our personal projects. Be that streams, artwork, writing, crafts, etc.

Cold take: Gundam ZZ is fun and has no qualms reminding the audience that they’re watching a cartoon. (But it’s Not an Anime!) Ignore the haters. ✌️

It’s been said over and over again, but it’s always worth repeating: Crunch is bad for everyone and isn’t a triumph of the workforce, it’s a failure of management.

Stop romanticizing crunch culture. It's killing people, not creating art. We ALWAYS hear that suffering makes better work. You've likely heard it a thousand times. Hell, you've probably...

I don't get it. Everyone loves anime. Everyone loves Mad Max. NOBODY talks about Fist of the North Star. What the HELL is going on? It doesn't add up.

Anime has been kicking butt and taking names at the box office and on streaming for a long while now. Better pay and working conditions for the artists, crews, and localization staff is a very reasonable way forward.

Don’t let some suit tell you it’s “unrealistic” or “unsustainable.”

Looney Tunes remained popular for decades precisely because it was airing in widespread syndication on TV all the time. Old cartoons should be FREE to find new audiences, ESPECIALLY when their rights holders don't even care enough to platform them anymore.
After leaving HBO Max earlier this year, ‘Looney Tunes’ is a hit on Tubi, the company says, and popular across generations. It should be a model for every classic cartoons trapped in streaming limbo.
