Some facts on greenway are needed
Comment & Analysis: The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport, this morning, is discussing greenways (watch it live here), and a group called the "National Greenway Action Association" will be presenting their case against the use of Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPOs) for greenways. What does the group want? Given the claims that groups against greenway projects are making -- the groups say they are not against greenways, just some projects -- here are some facts :

Some potential solutions for John Street - School Street in #Wexford Town... and why not allow for contra flow cycling from the Arts Centre through the Bull Ring @wexbug.bsky.social
Here’s some of the new layouts that may be coming to a street near you soon
The rule book used by councils for the layout of road signs and markings, the Traffic Signs Manual, has been updated to support recent legal changes, which this website covered last month. The upda…

When you see Dutch cycling, it’s amazing. Trying to weaponise it against cycle paths in Ireland does not fit the facts and is just kind of silly
Comment & Analysis: When discussing the promotion of cycling, the Netherlands is often mentioned for obvious reasons, given that it is decades ahead of nearly everywhere else and has a number of cities where more than 50% of residents cycle to work or education. So, naturally, people who don't want cycle paths will come up with excuses why we cannot follow the Dutch.

'The real scandal here is not “bike shed groundhog day.” It’s the groundhog day of car dependency, subsidised at vast public expense, locking us into congestion, pollution, poor health and missed climate targets.'

Great piece from @ciarancannon.bsky.social

Opinion: Those outraged by a €100k bike shed should look at the annual cost of renting out car park spaces
We have completely normalised investment in congestion, pollution and the continuation of car-first planning, writes Ciarán Cannon.

Clear reasoning as to why we need a national evidence based approach to delivering default 30kph limits in built-up areas.

Delegating this to local govt will mean delays & inconsistencies & lead more pointless deaths & serious injuries.

Lower speed limits will help Ireland reduce road deaths
Wales cut road casualties by 28% after reducing speed limits. Yet only one of the new lower speed limits introduced in Ireland's Road Traffic Act 2024 has been implemented

We are delighted to support #Love30 who are calling on the Oireachtas and every Local Authority to make 30 km/h the default speed limit in built-up areas, but particularly in town centres, residential estates, and in the vicinity of schools and places of public assembly.

WexBUG were happy to participate in the rally for safer roads this morning. The Love 30 Campaign advocates for a standard urban speed limit of 30kph. Research shows that this will reduce road deaths and injuries. Time for the promises of action on road safety to be prioritised. #Love30

Dear Wexford CoCo,
If School St 💜💛 was in Stockholm, this is what it would look like.
You see - each time you create a one way street, because 2 way for cars isn’t feasible, you cut off vital cycling routes
Contra-flow for cycling is a solution applied right across Europe!
Let’s do better Wexford 🙏

Ireland needs 30km/hr default urban speed limits, not mealy mouthed politicians 👇
‘After converting over 90% of its 30mph roads to 20mph, Wales saw 25% fewer people being killed or injured..’
‘Welsh drivers are paying on average £45 less than they would have been without the change in speed limits’

Nothing demonstrates the importance of safe, segregated infrastructure than experiencing what it's like to cycle/scoot yourself. Great to see this change of heart from Cllr Walsh.
Great to see Cllr Walsh getting a fresh perspective on the experience of those choosing to cycle and scoot.

“I now have a better understanding of what cyclists and scooter users are dealing with […] & it made me realise just how important the Council’s Active Travel plans really are.”

If every single bicycle in the world disappeared cars would be just as slow as they are today.

If every single car in the world disappeared bikes would be multiple magnitudes faster than they are today. A 40 minute urban bike ride would go down to 20 minutes.

The government is:

❌ Failing to provide good quality active transport infrastructure
❌ Failing to introduce a 30 km/h default urban speed limit
❌ Failing to protect people

Make no mistake, the rise in people being killed is not an accident — it’s the result of political choices.
Road deaths are going down - but more cyclists and pedestrians are being killed. Why?
The number of pedestrian and cyclist deaths is now at the highest level in six years.

The Irish Times criticised for “stoking hostility between road users” as people cycling killed in crashes reaches near-decade high
The Irish Times has been criticised for publishing a letter which jokingly refers to an anti-cycling trope just as three people cycling lost their lives on Irish roads in one week. One campaign group, which criticised the letter, said it amounted to "stoking hostility between road users", and another outlined how it downplays the regular red light running by motorists.
