Jul 13 1917 In NZ, Col Potter "rounded up 14 conscientious objectors from the Terrace Gaol and had them taken to the troopship due to set sail from Wellington." Among them was Mark Briggs sentenced to 28 days of Field Punishment No 1 for disobeying a command to peel potatoes

“Lost, Found
But Never Forgotten”

These words give a glimpse into Pte George Nugent’s story. Killed on the Somme, on 1st July 1916, George’s remains lay undiscovered for over 80 years. They were finally laid to rest on 1st July 2000.

A bronze memorial plaque at Saint-Remy-la-Calonne (55) commemorates 16 men from 54e Régiment d’Infanterie who died in the regiment’s first attack in the Tranchée de Calonne sector, 22 Sep 1914.

I recently finished Michael Korda's _Muse of Fire_, and what a powerful journey it was. Korda offers a moving account of the First World War's poetic titans—Sassoon, Rupert Brooke, Wilfred Owen, and Alan Seeger. What struck me most was how their lives often intersected in profound ways.
