What is War Movie Theatre about? How do we pick the films?
The idea was first to talk about the films we watched growing up, and how they shaped our understanding of the world. But we've gone wider...

This week on War Movie Theatre, I'm urging Duncan Weldon to STAY ALIVE as we watch The Last Of The Mohicans. No matter what happens, you can find us wherever you get your podcasts.

Fantastic episode, and one I was nervous about because I love Last Of The Mohicans more than is appropriate and wasn't sure I would cope it if they were mean about it.

One of the joys of this podcast is that listeners answer all our questions. So we're very grateful to Zachary of North Carolina for telling us that Chingachook's wicked weapon in Last of the Mohicans is a Gunstock War Club: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunstoc...

Currently my favourite podcast.

Enjoy being reminded of films I like or love and finding out more about ones I've never watched and then seeking them out.

This week's episode of War Movie Theatre is our most popular yet. Join me and Matt Chorley as we discuss why Dad's Army has lasted, why Captain Mainwaring really is a hero, and why Arthur Lowe had a trousers clause in his contract.

Watching Dad's Army as a boy in the 70s, I completely accepted that Sergeant Wilson was Pike's Uncle Frank. Bachelor uncles being fussed over and looked after by their sisters was a normal part of life where I grew up.
Who do you think you are kidding, Mr Hitler? We're off to Walmington-on-Sea with stupid boy @mattchorley.bsky.social to watch Dad's Army, and learn about Arnold Ridley's bayonet wound and the "trousers" clause in Arthur Lowe's contract. champ.ly/yZBp05Wb

We're doomed! This week, the pod is all that stands between Walmington-on-Sea and the Nazis, as we're joined by @mattchorley.bsky.social to watch Dad's Army.

I often wondered whether the endless re-runs of Dads Army - and the opening credits map - fed Into the English exceptionalism tendency that manifested in Brexit. Interesting to read that Lowe - a classic 70s Tory - campaigned for ‘Yes’ in 1975. Different times.

This is why it's so much fun to make @warmovietheatre.bsky.social - even a film like Dad's Army has proper moments.
Ooh, excellent debate on Mainwaring @roberthutton.co.uk ...the moment on the barricades over the shotgun shells, when Wilson is about to make a sarcastic comment but sees M's face and just turns back to face the 'enemy'. Pure respect (however irritating he must be to work for). Mainwaring is a hero

Don't Panic! Don't Panic! This week, we're watching Dad's Army - The Movie (very much the 1971 version), with International Man of Comedy @mattchorley.bsky.social.

I've just found out from an early episode of the excellent @warmovietheatre.bsky.social that The Vicar of Dibley was filmed in the same village (Turville) as the 1942 home front invasion classic Went The Day Well. This feels like a missed opportunity for an incredible remake.

Such a weird film this one. The first hour is almost like an early Carry on (with a load of early Carry on actors!) but the last half hour is fantastic action.

Disappointed that neither of you broke into song mid-pod. I’d like to see that as a feature going forward!
