There are psychologically broken people. The culture they stew in turns them rotten, and then their control of the state enables them to weaponize that lack of emotional and psychological well-being against the rest of us on a mass scale.

What does open borders mean? It means the individual has presumptive freedom of movement. You can cross borders without suspicion or harassment. If you choose, there is a clear, easy path to citizenship. That's it. Open borders treats everyone like a potential fellow citizen, like a human being. /🧵

It doesn't have to be this way. We should have open borders. But as a first step we should *at least* decriminalize immigration. You overstay a visa? You get a strongly worded letter, or a fine, or you lose certain civil privileges. You don't get clapped in irons or torn away from your life.

In America right now, it's easy to see the violence of Trump's closed border vision because mass deportation leads to indiscriminate violence that spills over onto citizens and white folks. But criminalization of immigration even in quieter times means detainment and deportation.

As long as there is a regime of hard immigration control—where violating immigration rules is treated as a crime—you will have outright racists trying to use the enforcement machinery to their hateful ends.

You may think that there are valid reasons why we should control immigration. But there are also very racist reasons to control immigration. Who on the control side will make this their *passion*? Technocrats interested in fine-tuning skilled/"unskilled" ratios? Or the Great Replacement ghouls?

Now is the time to envisage what we actually want from an immigration policy. There is a chance that in the next few years we'll actually get a stab at it.

To this end: the violence and racism of immigration restriction has always been there. 🧵

As for "libertarians" writ large, my guesstimate would be: about a third went full MAGA, about half stuck to fence-sitting both-sides-ism (see that in the vote totals above), and only the minority remainder were ever strongly anti-Trump. Most of whom are now disaffected from libertarian orgs.

Unlike Radley and Shikha I was never at Reason (I only wrote a piece for them once). But having been in the similar orbit at Cato: some libertarians have been good on strongly opposing Trump as a uniquely dire threat, but it was firmly a minority. To claim vindication writ large is... unmerited.

@rechelon.bsky.social is an anarchist who has never identified with libertarians, but as a @c4ssdotorg.bsky.social market anarchist they've been adjacent to the movement. They've done great work on how libertarians failed on crucial issues of fascist creep. humaniterations.net/2025/12/30/2...

And everyone should learn from the libertarian movement's gross failure to adequately mobilize against Trump & the authoritarian right, to resist alt-right infiltration & fascist creep in libertarian spaces, & to apply our principles consistently to the current moment.

This was a huge failure.

Taxation is theft, and I want the right to opt out of being forced to fund this.
In the last month ICE has bought warehouses in:

- Hagerstown, MD: $102 million
- Surprise, AZ: $70 million
- Hamburg, PA: $87 million
- Tremont, PA: $120 million
- San Antonio, TX: $82 million
- El Paso, TX: $123 million
- Social Circle, GA: price unknown

This is unprecedented.

One of my college friends just made an FB post like “people are so negative about Trump, can they name three good things he’s done?”

And it’s taking all I have to resist the temptation to make absolutely everyone mad by replying, “Operation Warp Speed, lockdown stimulus checks, and mask mandates”

BTW, any time DHS or media claim federal agents cannot be investigated or criminally charged by state or local agencies for use of force violations, that is not true. Even CBP & Border Patrol require it according to policy: p. 26.

I am all in on a big tent against fascism, but to be taken seriously you have to examine your own role in its rise. Libertarians are fundamentally unserious people, and some of MAGAs biggest supporters. As a group, they didn't warn anyone about anything.

When I worked for Reason magazine during Trump's rise to power in 2016, I was explicitly forbidden by the editor in chief from writing about Trump's racism, or the violence and racism at his rallies.

It was a "sideshow," I was told.
Weird. I tried to warn libertarians about Trump
