Thanks to @tinyicybubbles.bsky.social for helping cut this ice! Hoping to get some ages (probably over 400,000 years) from this ice from 651 m deep. @cambridge-earthsci.bsky.social @erc.europa.eu @royalsociety.org

🧊Our researchers have just finished analysing ancient Antarctic ice spanning 1.2 million years of climate history!

The Beyond EPICA project extends the ice core climate record by 400,000 years, helping us to understand long-term climate patterns and improve future predictions.

In a UN speech today, President Trump said that "all of these [climate] predictions were wrong".

Back in 2019 I led a research effort to digitize old climate model projections and assess how well they did. Turns out they got future warming pretty spot on!

For answers to key questions around #ClimateChange, including how scientists know that recent changes in our climate are caused largely by human activities, see our page of frequently-asked questions: royalsociety.org/news-resourc...
Evidence & Causes of Climate Change | Royal Society
Climate change is one of the defining issues of our time. It is now more certain than ever, based on many lines of evidence, that humans are changing Earth’s climate.

I doubt there is a “cause” for autism, but if I wanted to test for possible contributory factors, I wouldn’t ask an economist or a lawyer. I’d ask a medical scientist who could tell me what the scientific literature tells us. All of it: not just the bit that gives the answer I want to hear.

If anyone is reading, then I have repurposed the Wacswain account to show my name (Eric Wolff). The ERC project has ended, so I can’t claim to speak for its members any more. But I will start posting here again, mainly about science but I may be tempted to give my opinion occasionally as well!

In July 2025, the U.S. DOE released a climate report tied to EPA’s proposed rollback of emissions rules.
The report claims to challenge decades of climate science…
But scientists say it is unscientific and misrepresents key findings 🧵

Misleading U.S. Department of Energy climate report chooses bias over science, climate scientists say
DOE report written by climate contrarians shares misleading information on climate change and excludes well-established evidence.

Our project “BeyondEPICA” collected ice at least 1.2million years old. Now we are meeting at this palazzo in Venice to finalise how it will be analysed to show us the climate and CO2 across this fascinating time period!

5. The fact that a significant part of WAIS was lost anyway still says we should avoid the climate that caused it. That requires us to reach net zero sooner rather than later.
January 29, 2025 at 4:57 PM
4. Lessons for the future?
This suggests we should expect significant ice loss from WAIS over the next decades to centuries, but makes the very worst case scenarios look slightly less realistic.
January 29, 2025 at 4:57 PM
3. We find:
a. The Ronne Ice Shelf survived
b. But the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) certainly retreated .
So it's good news and bad. The ice sheet retreated but didn't do the worst case that some models proposed. WAIS retreat was probably mainly in the Amundsen sector, not the Weddell.
