I love this 1959 photo of my dad’s parents and my grandparents, Louis and Lorraine. True sweethearts. Behind them is the Morgantown, West Virginia school my dad went to as a kid (it’s now gone and the house itself is surrounded by the @westvirginiau.bsky.social campus, where my dad also went)

Every day so far is just some version of “do we still have that one load bearing law that protects the system from abuse? Maybe not!”

Few material things can provide perspective. This does for me.

Photo of Otto Frank, returning to his family’s hiding place. In 1944, an informant betrayed them and the family was sent to Auschwitz.

His wife (Edith) was murdered, his daughters (Margot & Anne) died of Typhus.

The Beatles and The Stones and Zeppelin and The Beach Boys and The Who are all wonderful but when you reach the age of 56 you realize it was The Byrds and The Kinks all along. Happy birthday to me.

Adiel is great and her work in part prompted UPS to install ACs in their trucks during blistering hot summers. A true impact journalist.
NBC News laid me off Thursday, as part of a move away from investigative projects to more breaking news. That’s an unfortunate shift, at a time when investigative reporting is so vital. I’m now looking for new opportunities to do that work and will be at NICAR to connect in person.

Does the new deal w Colombia address this at all ?
Yes, the deportees were in shackles. The crime they committed was having no documentation. That is not violent criminals.

The "first they came..." poem gets quoted and quoted and quoted and quoted and you know what, we do in fact know who they're coming for first, right now, and that is trans people, and the answer needs to be "absolutely the fuck not, you motherfuckers," full stop.

As cases start that will head to SCOTUS, a reminder that during the Biden Administration, the court ruled that the President -- any President, in theory -- did not have the power to:

Regulate greenhouse gases.
