Reminder that we spend an order of magnitude more money on the bureaucracy required to deny people benefits that it would cost to just give benefits to everybody who asks for them.
Years ago, an organizing crew I was part of worked to help an unhoused woman in our neighborhood get services. She was dying and qualified for a number of programs. It took a team of seven working for almost two months to secure her a warm bed to die in. Her name was Jennifer.
I know this isn’t new information but I just really gotta emphasize how goddamn difficult it is to successfully sign up for SNAP or Medicaid, even if you’re Good At Paperwork
