Echidnas are surprisingly good swimmers and have been documented venturing onto beaches and into the surf to cool down, hunt, or travel. This one was patrolling the Surf Beach behind the Bunga Arm camp site.

A man is in hospital after falling c. 40 m down a cliff at a beach in Melbourne's south : The rescue comes just days after a woman fell off a cliff in the neighbouring suburb of Beaumaris : There were also a number of similar rescues at beaches in Victoria in December.

Emergency Warning - Bushfire - Leave Immediately Issued Today at 4:51 PM. This Emergency Warning is being issued for Break O'Day, Buxton, Clonbinane, Devlin Bridge, Flowerdale, Glenburn, Kinglake, Kinglake Central, Kinglake West, Marysville, Murrindindi, Rubicon, Taggerty, Toolangi, Woodbourne. • There is a bushfire at Longwood that is not yet under control. • The bushfire is travelling from Longwood in a southerly direction towards Taggerty and Buxton. A wind change is expected at around 8:00pm tonight (Friday 9 January). This will cause the fire to change direction to the north east, heading back towards Strathbogie. Conditions will become very dangerous and unpredictable! Leaving immediately is the safest option, before conditions become too danderous.

Evacuation Checklist - Grab your Emergency Kit and other prepared gear PEOPLE - Medication (including prescriptions), sanitary and toiletries. - Mobile phone/s AND charger/s. - Cash, credit and debit cards. - Protective clothing and a change of clothes. - Important documents - Insurance, Will, Passport etc. - Photos and personal treasures. - Laptops, tablets, flash & hard drives AND chargers. - Drinking Water - 3 L p. person, p. day & Food for 48hrs. - Children's (special) Toys/Blankets. - Requirements for; Disability, Infants, Elderly, Sick & Injured. - Contact details: family, friends, doctor, vet, council, insurance & utility. - Fill in Attached Evacuation Card - Leave where emergency services can easily locate it. PETS - Beds/ Baskots/Crates - Leashes - Medication - Food and bowls for water/food. - Toy, Treats, blanket - familiar items to reduce stress. PERSONAL & ADDITIONAL ITEMS - Add your own Evacuation Map 1. Draw your property and/or floor plan, in the grid area, mark escape routes and exits. 2. Identify at least two ways out of your property and every room. 3. Mark an outside meeting place, such as water tank or letter box. 4. Talk to your household &/or workplace about your plan, review and practice Survival Tips Too Late To Leave 1. Which room should I shelter in? a. Fire - Never shelter in a bathroom or an inner room with no exterior exit. Shelter in a room with a window to observe fire and has an exit with a pathway to a cleared area. 2. Mains water and water tanks may fail or become contaminated during All Emergencies. Fill sinks, bathtubs, containers with water, as backup to fight fire and for hydration in case you are cut off for a number of days (3L, p.p, per day). 3. Turn ON evaporative coolers prior to Fire front arriving, wet down filter pads, turn OFF as fire arrives. 4. The main cause of property loss during a Fire is ember ignition. Wet down mulch, timber; walls, decking & stairs, roof and gutters, as well as block gaps under doors with wet wool 5. Prior to to Fire arriving, move all combustible materials from around or under the house, to at least 10m away, including; doormats, outdoor furniture, bins, vehicles, paint, gas bottles etc. 9. Stay with your Vehicle, whether encountering a Storm, Flood or Fire - you will much more easily be seen and rescued. a) Stay inside your vehicle for protection from the elements, as long as it's safe to continue to do so. Keep windows & external vents closed, to provide extended protection from smoke and water. b) During a Fire, use a wool blanket or other non-flammable object for protection, and lay on the floor inside the car, only exiting once main fire front has moved through. c) During a Flood/Storm, stay inside the car unless water is entering rapidly, or approaching the base of the seat. Exit through window onto roof - DON'T open the door as water may rush in. Take all communication & signalling devices with you and any protective clothing or equipment. DO NOT ENTER FLOOD Attention: Emergency Services The residents/workers of this dwelling, evacuated; Time: Date: Number of Persons: Names of Persons: Number of Pets/Animals: Type and Names of Animals: We are heading for Via the following roads/tracks You can Contact Us on Mobile/other: UNACCOUNTED FOR! 'The 2 major fires – at Longwood & Walwa – are spreading uncontrollably & cannot be contained despite the best efforts of hundreds of firefighters.

The fires are demonstrating pyro-convective behaviour, generating their own weather systems'.

It’s worth noting that the Central District is only 1 point from being rated at Catastrophic for Friday.

If you are out doing adventurous things, have a think about what resources would be diverted to help you if you get into trouble; tomorrow is not the day to divert resources.
