I'm curious to know what exactly separates people like Tom from democrats like Sam Nunn or Joe Manchin. What about the Republican party of the late 1990s and early 2000's was so much better that the conservative wing of the Democratic party?
"Penance?" I have a lot to say about the decline and fall of the GOP, but I'm not a Democrat and I'm not paying penance to a party whose excesses and feckless decisions *also* had a lot to do with the rise of authoritarian populism. (Populism was once a thing among the Democrats.)
